From the manufacturer
Marineland’s history is a story of innovation with two unique beginnings. The first opens with Robert Sherman, a Cleveland entrepreneur and businessman who manufactured high-end lobster tanks for restaurants and grocery stores. Sherman’s aquatic tanks included innovative filter technology and other features that made his tanks superior. By 1970, Marineland of the Pacific was ready to bring its knowledge of aquarium science and marine biology to consumers. Serious hobbyists quickly embraced Marineland Aquarium Products as the company that truly understood both the art and science of fish keeping.
Marineland brand is the world’s leading brand of innovative equipment and environments for consumers wishing to create the ultimate aquatic showcase. Committed to fishkeeping success for over 40 years, the brand is the professional’s choice for commercial display systems and scientific research. Whatever you’re passionate about – freshwater or saltwater, big or small, beauty or science – make your aquarium your own. The Marineland Magniflow 220 Canister Filter makes multi-stage filtration in your aquarium faster and easier than ever. This powerfully designed filter offers a top-sealing gasket for a strong seal with an easy-to-remove lid for access to media baskets – just lift up for easy removal. Water flows through, not around, media layers for total mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. A quick-prime button fills the filter chamber with water for self-priming startup, while a quick-release valve block shuts down water flow immediately and separates from the motor housing for quick, spill-free filter maintenance. Available in 3 sizes: 160 GPH (for aquariums up to 30 gallons); 220 GPH (for aquariums 30 to 55 gallons); and 360 GPH (for aquariums 55 to 100 gallons). Compatible with Marineland Rite-Size Filter Cartridges. Clean, sparkling water is the mark of a healthy, thriving aquarium. The amount of filtration needed to maintain an aquarium depends on a number of variables. These include tank size, individual maintenance habits and fish population. Whatever your individual needs, Marineland brand has the filtration products you need to deliver on-target, advanced filtration.

But why is she giving it 5 stars then?!
I'll tell you why.. I pulled out the box and called the number. I spoke with an incredibly nice man, who within 3 minutes had ordered me a replacement. No charge. I didn't have to argue, pay shipping, explain that no, I didn't break it. Nothing! I provided my address and another is on the way. Now, if this next one breaks like this one, I'll update my review. I think for some reason I just got a faulty one. I don't know why, but I'd like to think so.
I decided to go superhuman and used pliers on the clamp to provide maximum pressure on it. Surely this would squeeze the hose good enough to keep air from getting in. NOPE! Just as a test I submerged the entire intake assembly and top of the hose on the water, air issue stopped so I knew 100% that the issue was at the hose/intake area as I had suspected. Contacted customer service and they asked for pictures. Once they replied they said I had the clamp on properly and to stop the leak I should go get a metal hose clamp from the hardware store.
Picked up a $1 clamp, tightened and air BE GONE! Issue resolved. Filter is running great now. Hope they decide to include stainless clamps in the future vs the plastic ones. Filter is working great now and the tank is Crystal clear. This canister filter is alsi very quiet compared to the Fluval I had.
UPDATE 1/6/19 - Filer is still running perfectly. No leaks, no noise. Is holding up significantly better than a Fluval 206 I have on another tank which is sprouting leaks EVERYWHERE.
I have NO air stones and absolutely NO air bubbles in my water ... so I have no idea how air keeps building up in side the canister .
It's very quiet ... until it purges air ... then it scares the crap out of you !
Then came home one day to find the filter completely stalled, probably air locked, the canister head was very warm to the touch, so I unplugged it. Purged the air, plugged it back in and nothing. I let it sit for a couple hours, plugged it in and then it started working, sputtering out a large plume of bubbles again. A few days after this it started making faint rattling noises. So I took it a part again, and examined the impeller and found that the shaft had broken in two. At that point I decided to just return it to Amazon.
In spite of the issues, it filtered the water very well-the sponge and floss pad were both very filthy after the short period of use, and it was completely silent inside of the cabinet (until the impeller shaft broke.)
I had considered other canisters from Fluval (bad bypass, poor CS and pricey) and Hydor (cheap plastic housing, messier to service), but they all had their pros and cons and I decided at this point that a canister just wasn't worth the hassle for me. Canisters all in all require more service than their worth, IMO.
I decided to go with two Seachem Tidal 110 HOB filters. Cheaper and work just as good at filtering and they are a cinch to clean, so I clean them weekly and they still hold quite a bit of bio media. The best part is I never have to worry about them leaking, which is a "when," not "if," with canisters. And I use a Marineland magnum for water polishing once a week, it works great.
