Enjoy the LED Lighting Experience with the New Integrated Timer!
By consumer request, Marineland introduces the Aquatic Plant LED Lighting System. The new integrated timer is an essential feature to this lighting system; your plants need the timer to power them with the perfect amount of illumination throughout the whole day, especially when you’re not home. It gives the user ultimate control of the light, ensuring your plants get the right amount of light at the right time. The integrated timer allows you to control when the RGB and 6500K LEDs turn on and off. You can also turn each on or off with a single button. Now you’ll never have to worry about your plants when you’re away from them!
Come See the Shimmer, You’ll Never Look at Your Aquarium the Same Way Ever Again
The Aquatic Plant LED Lighting System introduces its new dispersion lens which guarantees a dynamic, new blending of light for your plants. The Aquatic Plant LED comes equipped with 3 watt RGB LEDs that provide 460nm blue which encourages “fullness”, 660nm red which encourages “reaching”, and green which accents the natural beauty of your aquatic plants. The dispersion lens makes sure these are all properly blended so your plants receive an adequate and fulfilling amount of light. The energy efficient 1 watt 6,500K LEDs provides your plants with the correct light energy for photosynthesis, assuring your plants proper growth. The 6,500K LEDs also feature a polycarbonate lens that adds a natural shimmer effect.

Top customer reviews
I put this on my 60G freshwater planted of course (18 inch height). Because the tank is newly setup, I couldnt tell you if the plants love it more than CFL/T5 or whatever else lighting.
I have had this for 2 weeks now, and none of the plants showed any deficiency with lighting. I have Java Fern, Anubias, Water Sprite, Wisteria, Bacopas and Jungle Vals in the tank. I know none of these plants required a lot of light, and 2 weeks is too soon to say much, but i do see new growths on all of the plants except the anubias which is a very slow growing plant anyways.
This unit sits flush on top of my glass cover and is inside of my canopy with open back. It is on 8 hours full white light and then 2 more hours of lunar blue light. The unit becomes pretty hot after a couple of hours with white lights mode. Maybe my canopy isnt ventilated enough, but I will raise it up some so it is not right on the glass which will also reduce the spot light effect.
EDIT: less than 2 years later, this light no longer functions as expected. The light will still come on when plugged in, but the white and blue buttons no longer work. This means that I can no longer set the timer on when the light comes on and goes off. I now have it plugged into a separate timer, but the light follows its pre-programmed schedule which is not what I want. I believe the pre-programmed light turns off at 10pm, but the timer starts at 3pm, so I can have a maximum of 7 hours of this light for my plants daily unless I want to manually plug and unplug this unit of course. Some of you may think that is a bit harsh to lower the rating from 5 stars all the way to 1. My reason is that I paid a premium price for this light, it is about 2-3 times the price as other competition. To break this down, I paid $350 for this light to last me 20 months, that is $17 a month for lighting, I am pretty sure I can get a better deal/light with this kind of result.
Second EDIT: I received an email from a Marineland rep who asked a few questions about how I have the unit set up. Basically to make sure I didn't abuse the unit. After finding out that I did everything I could to protect the unit, the rep sent me a new replacement even though my unit had been out of warranty so a few months. I sent them my unit and they sent a new one right back to me. The new unit is back on the tank and is functioning perfectly.
First, the actual unit measures 22 3/4" - but you'd have to allow for 24" of width for the power cord coming out of the side. You can use the wire brackets on either end (that extend to 36" wide) to sit on the side of the tank, or they work just as well as stands to sit on a glass canopy. The wire stands also pull completely out if you like. The width left a few inches on either side on my 30" wide 29gal - but I think the light coverage to the sides of the tank is pretty good.
The unit does get pretty warm... I can't hold it for too long before I have to sit it down when I'm taking it off my tank for something. The whole unit is built like a heat sink.
I love, love, love the timer! It comes set from the factory;
9am: blue lights
10am: all lights (white & RGB)
8pm: blue only
10pm: all off
All you have to do is set the time of day. And it's surprisingly simple to change any of the timing settings, even though there's only 2 buttons. If you turn on the blue or white lights and override the timer, you won't effect the timer's cycle - it'll keep on trucking.
The Red/Green/Blue LEDs (middle row, every other light) have diffuser lenses on them, and that is pretty effective at spreading the light from those LEDs around the tank. The RGB lights make a real difference in bringing out the colors in the fish and plants - things look more interesting! The rest of the regular white LEDs are relatively focused, which gives that awesome shimmer effect that mimics daylight.
I was wondering how the brightness and color was going to compare to what I had. For those with the same question, I put my old light back on the tank and took shots with the same camera settings. For those pictures and a more complete version of this review, head over to aquariumforum dot com.
And finally the moonlight. I dig it. A lot. I'm surprised by reviews that say the moonlight on this fixture is much brighter than the moonlight on even the Marineland double-brights. I wouldn't want it any softer at all - wouldn't be able to see anything!
Though since the blue light is also on with the white lights (as part of the RGB LEDs) I wonder if they will burn out first. But it's nice that this light is rated at 50,000 hours (unlike the Marineland single and double-brights that are only 17,000 hours). That's the same rating as Marineland gives their 10,000k Reef-capable lighting, but this one is at the more appropriate 6500k for freshwater.
I know I sound like a little Marineland fanboy, because that's all I've talked about here... I did consider Finnex for a time but the fewer LEDs on this Marineland (instead of more, smaller LEDs on the Finnex) gives a better shimmer effect, which I like a lot. That + the built-in timer = I'm very happy.
Update: This light is fantastic at growing plants. It grows even demanding ("high light") plants no problem. It also grows algae really well too. If you don't have a "high-tech" tank (meaning you're injecting co2 into your aquarium, and maybe even dosing plant fertz), this will turn your aquarium into an algae farm. Think of light/fertz/co2 at a 3-legged stool - everything's fine if they are balanced. Problems ensue (algae bloom) when they're out of whack. But that's a topic for another day. Just know that this is a very effective light for a planted aquarium, but might be more than you bargained for if you're just starting to dip a toe into the hobby.
