Mario Hoops is Square's first stab at a Mario spin-off since the revolutionary Super Mario RPG. Sadly, it falls well short of that previous effort, partly gimped by its hardware. Mario Hoops is proof that not everything is better with a touch screen, as by mapping all character movement, shooting, dribbling, and passing to touch gestures, the game is a nightmare to control. Even mapping just one of these to the D-pad would have made it much more playable. It's fun seeing a few Square characters play alongside Mushroom Kingdom faces, but that's really the only draw of one of the weakest Mario sports games out there.

After reading the Mario Hoops 3-On-3 reviews, my husband and I weren't so sure we'd like the game. Well, we LOVED this game! That just proves you can read reviews for gameplay and what the game is all about, but you are the only person who can judge. This game was a blast, and it's very fun beating my hubby. :P The multiplayer with 2 people can be on one game cartridge, but you can't play an actual basketball game unless you both have the game cartridge. On 2 player you can do 2 mini games where you dribble the ball and collect coins. :) Still my husband and I really like the game. On first player you make a profile and as you go along in the game and you can win rewards for quests which can be found viewing online websites that tell you the quests or found in the game. We got this game used and it already had a profile on it, so to delete that profile go online and it will tell you how. :) Collecting coins to shoot hoops may sound a little stupid, but my husband and I after playing it found it to be somewhat sensible and very fun. When people say your teammates don't do anything, they are right, but that's because you can switch people and be them also. The computers team gets harder as you go up. Practice will also be in the game that teaches you the controls and tips. I like how after doing certain quests you can win different outfits for the characters, unlock characters, and get a new ball. :) We've only unlocked two basketballs so far but the game overall is 5 stars. :)

I was hoping for this Mario sports title to be as good as others in the past. It isn't. Its gameplay hinges on using the stylus for everything except moving. That's never good.
To dribble the ball, you have to continually tap the screen, which gets annoying after too long. You also have to memorize which way to swipe the stylus to make any shot, so if you're like me, you'll just memorize one shot and keep using it till it goes out of style.
You pick three of your favorite characters to be on your team and face off 'tourney-style' against 3 other groups. That's kinda nice, but unlike Mario tennis or the other Mario sports games, your computer team mates cannot interact with the ball. You have to press the 'L' or 'R' button to switch to different members, and then control them to pick up the ball. Again, this gets really old really quick.
All in all, I didn't find it much fun. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I can't really recommend this to anyone.

Not what I expected at all. Thought it was going to be something like the NBA Jam franchise but with MARIO. Instead its a weird scoring basketball type game that you can score a 100 pointer if you bounce the ball on a certain spot over and over. Makes no sense when you have the ball stolen from you immediately because you are standing in the same spot trying to beef up your score. Its fun and its Mario, but its not a Classic.

Since Nintendo created their Nintendo DS system, they've absolutely maintained and and defined a whole new way of playing video games to the next degree. Not only that, they've also shown that in the element of their games with Mario. Since Super Mario 64 DS was developed, they've maintained so many DS titles with the Mario name that've delivered from Mario Kart DS, to the return of the classic 2-D days with New Super Mario Brothers. Now, with the success of their sports titles from other systems such as Super Mario Strikers from their Gamecube system, many skeptics are wondering if that kind of a Mario sports title can deliver on the DS. Here is the result.
Mario Hoops 3 On 3 for the Nintendo DS, brings the element of basketball, through Mario and company as if they've made the slam dunk. The object of the game is like most other basketball games, score the highest. You have so many differnt characters to choose from such as Mario and Yoshi, as well as clever unlockables Moogle and company from the Final Fantasy franchise. The courts all have unique Mario details that gave a whole unique way of playing basketball, from slam dunking on a airship, to the depths of the Blooper Sea. The graphics in the game are amazing, and absolutely deliver in detail from each character and move to score. The control, sadly misses a bit of the beat. Although you can control each of the characters well through the regular controls, but with the stylus, that is another story. The stylus controls miss out a little, and take a bit to get used to. Not only that, but it is the only way your character can actually execute their specialty shot from a Mario fireball, to a rainbow swoosh from Yoshi.
Despite a few flaws, Mario Hoops 3 On 3 is a solid sports title for the Nintendo DS. Although there may be other basketball titles down the road for the system, this is a really fun game to play for solo players, as well as muliplayer slam dunk action. I absolutely recommend this as addition to your DS library, and that is worth the slam dunk.

My grandson asked me to get this for him. When it came in, he immediately went to play it and didn't see him come out of his room for a couple of hours. I finally had to go in there and tell him he needed to play in the snow for a bit and get some fresh air. He grumbled and snow is his favorite.

I bought this game for the kids (4, 7 and 11). Found it a little complex to start, but once they got the basics they seem quite happy. Not a favourite, but it does seem to keep them happy for about an hour at a time.
