If you’ve never heard Mario Lanza sing, go to YouTube and check out some of the many music videos put together by loyal fans and you’ll be hooked. Handsome, charismatic, with an incredible voice many consider second only to Caruso (and many whom consider better), he had a meteoric rise in movies and records, singing opera as well as popular tunes of the day, only to have a sudden downfall and die tragically at the age of only 38 years old, just when things were starting to turn around. I highly recommend this riveting, extensively researched biography of him, with many quotes from family, friends and colleagues who knew him best. I’m so very glad that I bought this book…many thanks to the author, Derek Mannering.

This is a splendid work about a man who was not only a magnificent voice but one who was able to "crossover" from the classical to the popular and be the best of his generation and all generations. Mr. Mannering has made a definitive contribution to the Mario Lanza legend and reputation by searching for the truth and explaining the truth about this wonderful artist who contributed so much to his profession. Greater awareness about Lanza's legacy is needed so that future lovers of grand voices can appreciate what Mario's fans have known for decades. The next step is to make a movie about him so that the world can understand and know his glorious gifts.

Mr Mannerings book was written with love, respect, & caring for this fabulous singer. He did not dwell on Mr Lanzas faults or shortcomings but told us a sincere account of his life. Most of all he described his great voice and we felt a great feeling for Mr. Lanza. I have read it twice and no doubt will do so again. I just wish his life had not ended so soon as we would have been enthralled with more singing.

Although Armando Cesari's book, An American Tragedy is the the ultimate book to have on Lanza.He researched his life for years to get to the truth and rectify all the false accusations flung on Mario. I liked this biography of Mario Lanza. Compared to others, it is well written and it shows a will to give a 360 degrees analysis of Mario Lanza’s life and career. Most biographies are either to ‘technical’ or too interested about gossiping and thrashing the man. Thefact that Mario Lanza’s daughter is endorsing it, it’s in itself proof of the value of Derek Mannering’s work.

If you like Mario Lanza, this is a very good biography. Sadly, Mario is often maligned by his detractors but I believe that when he was at his best, he had the greatest tenor voice on the planet and I think this author and friend thought likewise. He has probably edited out many of the down-sides to Lanza's life but for a short time Mario was a phenomenon and it is good for someone to major on the positives. Books often do not hold my interest for long but I could not put this one down. I read it from cover to cover on a holiday beach and it was great.

If you want to read an unbiased account of the life of this great tenor both good and bad, then I would suggest starting here. The writing contains a wealth of good quality accurate and interesting information and it is presented in an easy to read and sympathetic way that will appeal to the fan and critic alike.
