*sigh* This game was not what I expected...
on October 10, 2014
I was SO excited to buy this game. I had always loved Mario Party since the N64 days. I figured it would be a good game to play on the go unlike RPG games for the DS that are really something you have to pay a lot of attention to (because for some reason people don't want to talk to you until you are playing a game...so annoying).
When I received this game in the mail, I was like hell yes time to party (no, I didn't actually say that). I began the story mode to discover that this party was not at all what I was expecting...
The mini games are very baby like in my opinion. They are so easy and baby like that I did not feel a challenge at all. The A.I. is so stupid in mini-games. If they were real people...they would not be able to tie their shoelaces.
What I find to be ridiculous about this game is that skill doesn't seem to matter in this game at all. It is all about dumb luck. Winning the mini-games does not matter like it used to in the 64 versions. When you got to the end of the turns, a star was given to whoever won the most mini-games. They took this out! Why?! It is almost as if winning the mini games does not matter at all. My character wins and wins and has like 110 coins and I can't get to the star, but just because that dumb Peach gets lucky and lands a star and only has five coins at the end of the game, she is a super star! She won like 0 games! WTH? Where does skill come in? So the only way to win this game is by having a dash of persistence and a little touch of crazy. There is nothing worse than losing to an A.I. this way! Especially one that is dumber than a pile of bricks!
One positive thing I can say about this game is that it does pass the time. I often have to wait in places for a long amount of time and the games are so easy that I am not annoyed when someone wants to talk to me while I am playing. It takes very little focus.
The music is awful. It is a lot of times a five second loop of nails on a chalkboard.
The story is so damn stupid. Bowser invites Mario and his friends to a dinner as an "apology". Now Bowser has been terrorizing these people for years, why would they be dumb and naive enough to go to his castle for food? Do they expect me to believe Mario and his friends are that stupid? They came over for food? Isn't Peach rich as hell? Why don't they chill at her castle and eat her food? Maybe she only eats cake or something? I don't know...but it was ridiculous. I'm sure that you guessed by now that it was a trap. Yes, Bowser set them up...total spoiler....*rolls eyes* I understand that it might be difficult to continually make stories for this franchise, but come on!
I gave this game two stars simply because it passes the time for me. It deserves lower actually, it reminds me of a worse version of Mario Party 3...based mostly on luck and not skill. At least Mario Party 3 made the mini games count for more. This game will drive you mad because of its unfairness.
This game is the saddest version of Mario Party I have ever played.
