What's nice about this vs. X-Com is that it's more approachable and a lot less complicated. I found X-Com to get a bit repetitive whereas this game brings in unique maps for every battle along with boss fights and some really fun play mechanics. Character movement is far less restricted (in fact they can even jump off of each other for extra distance), and there's multiple ways to strike enemies each turn. Characters can be upgraded with a skill tree system and there are plenty of weapons to choose from.
Game play consists of moving your characters through a Mario inspired map. Eventually they'll come across a battle area where the core game kicks in. Following the battle the characters can explore the battle zone in search of secrets or more on. Generally the maps keep the player moving progessively forward but occasionally there's some backtracking to do. There are some light puzzles that present themselves along the way too.
And that's my only gripe with this one - the weird integration of the character movement and puzzles between battles. It feels a bit disjointed from the core gameplay and lacks that familiar Mario action game feel. The characters just walk around sometimes without a clear indicator as to what they should be pointed at. It feels like a means of stretching out gameplay vs. something fun and meaningful to complete the game.
That gripe aside the core battle mechanic is well implemented, charming and innovative even if it borrows a lot from X-Com. The battles are challenging but a ton of fun and something I can recommend to fans of turn based strategy games. It's a great example of the kinds of games that will be successful on the Switch platform.
