This is the worst version of Mario Tennis I've played. The graphics are gorgeous, but it's very light on gameplay. There literally is no campaign or story mode! There's only one game I would call a mini-game and it's not good. There is a core game of tennis that does work, but the lack of content is horrible!

There are a few modes. There is Mega Battle which is tennis with mega mushrooms that make players big. There is standard tennis which you can play with or without jumpshots and chance shots. Then there's Mega Ball rally where you see how long you can hit the ball back and forth where the ball starts out huge and gets smaller and faster with every hit. Offline multiplayer is the best mode there is. You can play 1-4 multiplayer in all of these modes.. It's always singles and doubles (no two against one). If you only have three players, you'll have to have a computer player. I don't understand why you can't use Amiibos in any local multiplayer mode.

There are online matches for singles and doubles. I wanted this game so grandma could play online with my kids (like they do with Wii Sports Club). Sadly there is only random matchup online! That stinks! There are ranked games and games for fun. You can play all of the normal modes online, and you can use one of your Amiibos online in doubles matches. But you can't play with your firends online! Well, you can play online doubles with two people who are in the same room playing against two other random people on the internet. But it's not the same! There's no way to create a tournament with your friends unless they're right there!

Finally there is a knockout mode. This is the only mode that isn't a single match. You fight one opponent after another. Each match gets harder and harder till you you beat 15 opponents.

Welp, never bothered to write a review on Amazon before, but I am legitimately angry at how mailed in this effort was for Mario Tennis. I still play the N64 version a few times a year for the solid tennis gameplay, so after reading initial reviews I thought at least this would be a good HD update. I'm less interested in the gimmick modes, so ymmv if you are looking for those.

Less number/interesting character choices
No first player mode outside just single matches, can't even play a tournament
Minor point, but no nunchuk usage, wiimote NES style only (or gamepad/pro controllers. No idea why they would do this)
Fully simple mode still leaves giant stars on the map to place yourself for spikes and a weird camera angle on serves
Playing a quick simple mode online match led to Toad making nearly full court dives to hit the ball. This is not why I'm playing simple mode
They didn't even bother to voice over character names. "Receiver wins" when breaking my opponents serve. Seriously?!?

This may still see a little action when the friends visit for our once a year game playing weekend, but I imagine we'll just stick with Mario Tennis 64 and deal with the dated graphics. Just ridiculous how little effort was put into this game, and I can only hope they will go the Splatoon route and add updates/content after the fact. Game should be a $20 release.

I'm a huge Mario Tennis fan. I first played Mario Tennis 64 in 2000 when it came out and have been hooked on the series ever since. From 64 to Power Tennis on Gamecube to it's reissue on the Wii all the way to Open on the 3DS. I even went back to the portable Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance games, the only one l haven't played is the original game for the Virtual Boy. With that out of the way, l find it difficult to express how disappointed l am in Mario Tennis Ultra Smash.

Where are the modes Nintendo? How do they expect us to fork over $50 for almost no modes? It's maddening. So there's no tournament and no story mode, leaving me sitting here playing exhibition matches over and over. Great. A true bare-bones release. I bought these Mario Tennis games because they offered more of a gaming experience than this. I looked forward to playing those increasingly difficult tournaments and winning those cups, it gave me a reason to play and re-play. Now l have very little reason to play. Knockout Challenges replaces tournament mode and it does offer some difficulty but it's not nearly the same. You can earn coins to purchase unlockables. Mega-Ball Rally is the only mini-game present. You hit a mega ball instead of a tennis ball, it's nothing special.

Now the gameplay itself is not horrible, it's just that it's lacking any type of support or input from the manufacturer. Even online is a joke with no lobbies or communities. You can't play with your friends online either, what a downer. The gameplay is decent and the game looks beautiful with it's crisp colours and sharp graphics. The visual elements are stunning, it's a visually appealing game, l'll give it that.

well....i bought it but after hearing the reviews about it, i'm sad to say i might actually regret it a little bit. that won't stop me from having a blast with Mario tennis ultra slam but where's the tournament mode? Tournament mode for me is what gave Mario tennis it's charm and hardly any mini games too? what did Camelot do in making this? i shouldn't complain. i should be glad there's a Mario tennis on the Wii U at all. now if they could only make a Mario golf to follow it up. anyway i like tennis in any form wherther it be Mario style or not. this should be great despite the lack of modes. i'd still recommend this to all Mario tennis fans

update. i am not happy, i ordered but this but now thier sending it back to amazon. what the heck is wrong with them?! i don't like this one bit.
