What do they give for saving you the money and tons of calories for eating out by spending on these figurines? More than $12 should allow.
Why I will buy these like they are going out of style:
1. They won't go out of style and will certainly be cross platform compatible aspects of Nintendo's growing Halo of integrated and compatible accessories.
2. They are very attractive and the production quality is top notch if you only ever planned to say, collect them for display on a shelf.
3. The figures work and have unique benefits across several games right out the door. Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Smash Brothers of course, and you can COUNT on next year's zelda, even old titles like Mario 3D world to new games with no mention of pending compatibility have a high chance of being patched to make use of the characters for some in game value add.
4. The smash brothers Amiibo game mode has become in one day my favorite way to play. I'm 31 now, and can't keep up like I used to with the online high reflex kids playing, but Amiibo mode basically gives you a level 1 no unique qualities character - and you through choosing and watching fights, who you fight, where you fight, items they pick up on their own and more all influence these being more like pokemon that you get to raise and tweak to your style from level 1 into custom killing machines that are advanced in their learning and growth - from traits like learning more and leveling up faster from their failures than successes, to ensuring they fight a broad range of characters and ideally ones that you also made so they throw your Amiibo curve balls VS expected default moves. They really made this game something I can see myself being dangerous at again!
Put it this way, you don't see x-jockey horse race vets win the triple crown, it comes down to the investor and horse owner, jockey pick maker, and "coach"/man behind the curtain that makes a race horse a triple crown winner. I can play that game VERY well and am actively raising my Amiibo to someday crush yours. Up for the challenge?
Sadly, you'll have to destroy the packaging to remove the figures, and you'll absolutely have to remove the figures to use them. Nintendo placed a signal blocker under the base of the figures in the blister, so that you can't use them still inside their boxes, unlike Skylanders and Disney Infinity.
Compared with other similarly sized figures, these are a good value. The quality is better than most, and the Amiibo functionality is really essentially free (or very low cost). At the moment, Amiibo functionality is somewhat limited, unlocking cosmetics and minimal content, and not really offering any new gameplay options. If these figures are a success, it's quite believable that Nintendo will expand their capabilities.
Nintendo seems aimed at releasing Amiibos for every character appearing in the new Wii U Smash Bros, so you'll have plenty of characters to choose from. If you're a collector, you'll probably want to preorder them, as some seem to be rarer than others, and there's no clear communication yet as to whether Nintendo will replenish stock of sold out characters, or just continue to make new characters. Oh, and there's plenty of potential for reposes and new versions of existing Amiibos. The world needs colorful Yoshi options, and powered up Marios, and rad Samus variants. Right?
In conclusion, if you're a long time Nintendo fan, the Amiibo figures really are about the best collectibles on the market. Nicely built, nicely painted, and functional.
First off, as a figure itself- I'm actually surprised at just how great Mario looks- he's in my top three for favorite Amiibo and he's easily near the top for build quality. There's no articulation, but these aren't those types of figures (and there's a pretty great Mario figure available now for not a whole lot more than this, if that's your sort of thing!)
Next, for the NFC portion- right now its uses are fairly limited, given that so few games are compatible with Amiibo. Because of this, I'll only be focusing on Smash Bros. Within that particular game, these are quite fun- it's essentially an NPC you can bring with you into Smash matches. You can change the costume, level it up through fights, and feed it items to boost its base stats. It learns and adapts to fight beside (or against) you, and it does this very, very well. However, you cannot "play as" your amiibo or use it in non-smash modes, likely since it would greatly unbalance the single player experience. While disappointing, it's understandable as this is supposed to be a game based on skill, not "how many items do I have to eat until I'm unbeatable?"
So, in summation- this isn't Skylanders or Disney Infinity. You don't need the Mario Amiibo to play as Mario, so for unlocking things he's not very useful. However, Amiibo can and WILL enhance your experience and bring more to the game than has ever been present in Smash before.
But aside from that, everything else seems very well done.
