Armed on the water for nearly a decade, I know an unstable and constantly moving boat is tough to shoot from with any accuracy, even at close distances. I'm also aware of men out there who make it look almost too easy, firing rounds with precision into small moving targets hundreds of yards away. Fredrik Jonsson, a Swedish Marine and master sniper who served with his country's maritime commandos and VBSS teams, is one of those men. In 2010 Jonsson penned the Maritime Sniper Manual: Precision Fire From Seaborne Platforms, a book published by Paladin Press that's received outstanding reviews from snipers and precision marksmen I know and respect. After reading it myself I have to agree with them. The book is a military quality manual from beginning to end.
Whether on a RHIB, frigate, aircraft carrier, or other floating platform, this manual walks its readers through each step of delivering accurate fire with a scoped rifle, from finding a shooting stance on board to prioritizing targets and finally pulling the trigger. The methods used to successfully engage a target moving with or through the water are the trapping and tracking techniques anyone familiar with rifle shooting would expect. These are explained by Jonsson, then expanded on with information that, without this book, could only be gained after years of shooting experience on the ocean. Environmental factors expected to effect the path of each round are described in detail, including waves, vessel engine vibration, and water temperature, and proven methods of compensating for them are outlined. Information on penetrating vessel construction materials is given, and includes measurements for deflection, calculated for the reader during live fire tests, that will allow shooters to adjust their aimpoint with confidence.

When I served as a sniper in the US Army I was never given the Tom Berenger award or any such non sense, but having conducted dozens of combat operations as a sniper and having graduated from the Army sniper school, I would not have thought that this book would be packed full of new content that I had never heard of before.

The "Maritime Sniper Manual" has something to teach junior and veteran snipers alike. The manual is broken down in a logical manner and presents the information in easy to digest bits and pieces as you read the book. Here is some of the information I learned that I have never read from any other source:

-How to make wind calls based on sea conditions (ie: size of the waves)
-How to time your shots between waves and synchronize your breath rate with them
-An in depth discussion on environmental factors such as how water temperature effects air temperature, which as we know effects external ballistics.
-A detailed look at shooting through the different types of glass that can be found on large ships
-Where is the best position on a ship for a sniper to place himself and how to construct a steady firing position once he gets there.

These are just a few of the "take aways" to be found in this manual. Other topics include tactics, equipment checklists, verbage to be used between the spotter and sniper, and much more. I've found that in this line of work that myth often over takes reality but in this case the author has both feet well grounded, making realistic assessments of what the sniper can and cannot realistically accomplish.

Some of the topics seemed rather academic such as the discussion about the Magnum effect, Poisson effect, and the Coriolis drift but like GI Joe says, Knowing is Half the Battle.

Rather to the surprise of a lot of military planners, the modern sniper has become perhaps the most valuable individual on the current battlefield, and Fredrik Jonsson's Maritime Sniper Manual beautifully discusses one reason why. Jonsson is a professional warfighter with real-world tactical experience and he writes for a professional warfighter audience -- US Navy SEALs, Marines, Coast Guard personnel, and anybody else who has a professional tactical mission on or around water. This is not one of those dramatic books intended for a general non-fiction audience, it is a book for members of the gunfighter brotherhood, and particularly those who have been formally schooled in the violent art of long-range precision rifle fire.

It's called a "manual" for good reason -- this book is intended to help develop professional snipers' skills in this especially challenging tactical environment. Unlike some manuals on precision marksmanship in a tactical environment, Jonsson's is very readable text that is logical and direct. I highly recommend it for any law enforcement or military snipers with any interest at all in the special problems of firing at moving targets from moving platforms. Anybody with a serious interest in the sniper mission will also find it interesting and insightful.

When I had a chance to review a preview copy of the book, I immediately asked for five more and sent them to some of my warrior brothers in the LE and military community, and that's not something I do very often. Jonsson's Maritime Sniper Manual is the kind of book that might give you another little advantage when you chamber a round and switch your safety to FIRE on the "two-way rifle range."
