Amanda Erlanson is a writer, art collector and editor of the art blog Erratic Phenomena. She grew up in backwoods New Hampshire without electricity or television, her nose buried in dusty old books, where she discovered a passion for Golden Age illustration. While slacking off from her job shelving books in the art history library of Dartmouth College, she learned most of what she knows about art. After earning her bachelor's degree from Dartmouth, she headed west to pursue graduate studies at California Institute of the Arts. She now lives in Los Angeles, where she divides her time between the entertainment industry and the art world, and delves into the hearts and minds of her favorite artists through her exhaustively researched interviews. Recently, she co-authored the books Andrew Hem: Dreams Towards Reality, Dabs Myla: Midnight Fantasy, Edwin Ushiro: Gathering Whispers, Chris Berens: Mapping Infinity, and Heroes & Villains, and contributed essays about Mark Ryden to his Rizzoli collection, The Gay '90s, and his massive Taschen monograph, Pinxit.

Beautiful book. I've wanted it for years & can finally justify buying it.

That being said, it arrived slightly damaged (edges bent & dented, some minor tearing around the sides). So that wasn't ideal, & should be noted... but this doesn't take away from the beauty of the artwork inside.

I've waited a long time to see this collection called The Gay 90's, and I can only say that I was smiling the entire time as I looked through this last night, I mean I was GIDDY!!! I'd never heard of Mark Ryden until about 5 years ago...some new friends came to my apartment and saw how I decorated and knew I would love his work. They were so right. Kitsch has never been so beautiful and hilarious as when this man shares on canvas what his mind sees. I feel incredibly lucky to own a copy of this book, I hope there are enough copies to satisfy all his fans. Thanks Amazon!!!

I love Mark Ryden's art! Visual artists are in a league of their own. My mother in law is a painter and it is amazing how detailed everything has to be to make the piece and how delicate every brush stroke is. This particular book is my favorite of Ryden's. It's bigger and the subject matter is a lot more interesting.. If you like him check out Camille Rose Garcia and Elizabeth McGrath. Both of them have books on Amazon which are really great too.

The reason I gave this three stars is because I ordered it along with 2 other books. The other two books came wrapped in cello. Being that I'm buying them for collection I wasn't planning on opening them. This one was not wrapped. I thought it might be a fluke so I arranged for a return (which was extremely simple and very fast to replace by the way). When the replacement arrived it too was unwrapped. If anyone that reads this has gotten a wrapped one, I'd like to know but at this point i'm assuming this particular book just might not be wrapped. Love the book, love the artist.

This is a well put together piece of work. The binding and the pages are of great material, and the colors just seem to pop the way I believe Mark Ryden wanted them to. This is a great purchase that I was debating over for some time, and I am glad that I did eventually decided that I need to have this adorning my shelves.

Mark Ryden's art is amazing and the quality of the images is beautiful. The only thing I don't understand about art or photography books is why do they always make a double or triple spread and the image gets "cut" in the middle cause is spread in 2 different pages, you end up loosing detail and it's very unconfortable to see.

I love Mark Ryden so I did like this book. Although I found a lot of his art to be more tame than I had expected. I bought another of his book's which was more what I had expected. But the Gay 90's has a pink portrait of Abraham Lincoln. You have to love that. There are so great paintings and drawings. He's the best!
