The Marquess of Cake (Redcakes Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 892 ratings

In this Victorian romance series opener, a dashing marquess finds himself craving a delicious pastry chef.

Scotch trifle fit for Queen Victoria, scones with clotted cream . . . Alys Redcake knows the way to a man’s heart. Yet she is unaware that with each morsel—and flash of ankle—she is seducing the handsome marquess frequenting her father's tea shop. Unmarried at twenty-six, Alys’s first love is the family business. But thoughts of the gentleman's touch are driving her to distraction . . .

With his weakness for sugar, the Marquess of Hatbrook can imagine no more desirable woman than one scented with cake and spice. Mistaking Alys for a mere waitress, he has no doubt she would make a most delicious mistress. And when he finds himself in need of an heir, he plans to make her his convenient bride. Yet as they satisfy their craving for one another, business and pleasure suddenly collide. Will Hatbrook’s passion for sweets—and for Alys—be his heart’s undoing?

A sweet-spicy romance, with adorable characters and tasty treats!

The Marquess of Cake is a very well-written book, with great plot and some very original characters.

The book is fast-paced, with the perfect balance of intensity growth, that keeps the reader guessing along the way, and makes him wants more at the end. The author weaves the story in such a simple manner that she touches profound topics, keeping the mood light and cute.

The characters are masterfully crafted into multidimensional people that the reader can connect, relate, love and understand. I personally adore both characters and I couldn't pick favorites, even if I tried. Secondary characters are also very good.

The sexual chemistry between the couple is perfect, and the descriptions of their passion is very well-written by the author.

Ms. Hiestand brings a breath of fresh air making her victorian heroine into a lady that once was a lower class worker and by appealing to the readers with sweets and treats that makes them literally hungry.

The author also explores beautifully all five senses of the reader, by creating a plot with lots of sensory descriptions, such as the smell of cakes and trifles, the decandent look of bridal cakes, and the velvety feel of liquor with desserts.

The Marquess of Cake is a fun, unpretentious novel that would appeal to anyone who enjoy a victorian tale of food and love.

"Marriage is an adjustment. For the woman... No Alys, for the man, too. Have patience."

Michael and Alys. They developed as characters and this book just gives An entirely new meaning to the word historical romance. It's funny, serious, interesting and all the characters are lovable! Michael is such a great man that I hardly found any flaws in him. Alys is the independent strong women who has worked almost all her life and she stands proud for doing that. It was a refreshing change from the usual miss. I would recommend this novel to anyone and everyone. Superb job Ms. Hiestand!

I appreciated the unique meeting of Alys and Michael as well as the unusual development of their relationship. My chief complaint is the pacing and a feeling that the story just ambled along until it finally sputtered to a stop with the foregone conclusion of its HEA. As far as characterization is concerned, Alys is too self-effacing for her supposed "spunkiness" to be believable and too self-sacrificing to be likable. I found myself being angry with her for allowing herself to be so marginalized by her parents and siblings. With regard to Michael, I just didn't get a sense of emotional depth from him with anyone other than his reportedly dead brother.

Bottom line: it's an okay read, but I don't feel compelled to read the sequels that address the lives and I loves of Alys' self-centered sisters.

There were parts that I really enjoyed and parts had me scratching my head. The writing wasn't even in how the character's acted. There were times I loved the H, and then he would do and say something that seemed out of character.

Also, at times I felt a connection to our H and h, and then bam - they felt like strangers. They seemed to have a better understanding of each other when they first met.

The lovemaking was somewhat descriptive. Because my feeling for the couple were all over the place, I didn't feel the passion when they made love.

The book is priced just above $1, and I'd say it is worth it. But, right now I have the second book in the series on my wish list because it is priced at $1.99 and I wouldn't want to pay that for this book, so waiting to see if it will drop in price.

I did like the uniqueness of the story, and it does pull at your heartstrings on how women couldn't have a brain, nor work outside the home. This story takes place less than 130 in the past and as the saying goes WE'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY, but still along way to go in wages - right?!!

The character's will have you loving them or hating them, they are all over the place in the feelings that will bring out in you. I always like to mention if there is a cliffhanger, and it is hard to explain in this story. Only one small question regarding our H/h has you wondering. There is more to know about the brother too. I understand this is a series, and most author's don't do an epilogue because they continue the story in the next book, but I love Epilogues. We do get HEA and the road isn't smooth sailing either.

I did have a question as to how Rose discovered something (not telling a spoiler) near the end of the story about our H/h that wasn't explained.

So yes, I recommend this book, but it isn't going to be the best Regency Story you've read, so keep that in mind. (ljb)

I loved this story of the Marquess of Hatbrook alias the Marquess of Cake. He was so named because he loved cake, probably a direct side effect of being a diabetic in a time when it was not commonly known or treated. I was extremely intrigued by the very unique way that it was covered in the story and the way the author handled both the topic and the treatment. I particularly like the way she introduced the Marquess to a better way to cope with his problem and keep him on an even keel.

I also loved Alys Redcake and her take charge no nonsense way of handling all the different things that were thrown at her. I thought it was a well done rather nice historic romance/Victorian novel. It has great characters and a wonderful and different subject matter. The author dealt with the turn of the century and the changing circumstance of the aristocracy and the common labors.

All in all I think this one is one you will enjoy and remember long after you turn the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful tale of love and debauchery
Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2016
What a wonderful tale of love and debauchery, all taking place in England in the late 1800's.
Alys thought her life was on track, just the way she had planned it out. She loved her work at the bakery, and thought her life complete as long as she could bake and decorate her cakes. But her father has different plans for her. Now that he has been knighted, he wants her married, paving the way for her two younger sisters to follow suit.
Michael, Marquess of Hatbrook, has a sweet tooth. He finds himself with shakes if he doesn't eat, and of course, he loves sweets, so while he is having tea and cake at Redcakes, a wonderful tea room, with his friend, he is captured by Alys, especially since she literally falls into his arms.
But, are these two prepared for what is to follow? This book is fast paced and full of intrigue, rogues, gossips and everything in between. Once I started, I had a very difficult time putting it down until the end, and even then, I could have continued reading more. I am thrilled to find that there are more in this series, and hope to read them all. The author has a wonderful talent, bringing us back in time with her eloquent words and tale spinning. Loved this book. Well worth the read.

Wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this book. Centred around a Tearoom that sells excellent cakes. Well I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I would any of the cakes. What a delightful story, a change from my norm! I will definitely be buying the next book in the series to see how the characters go on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had a lot of potential
Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2016
I started reading this and really enjoyed it at the beginning. I thought it was going to be one of those "slow build, into a great romance" kind of thing and was really looking forward to see what happens.

About halfway through, I realize I was wrong. It was a sudden boom, and all of these things were happening which made me go "???" and just want to scream out "whyyyyyy!"
Then it was getting close to the end and when I got there, I realize what the problem was. Execution.

There were too many unrelated or unnecessary things happening, and it made the execution sloppy. I realize it's because there is to be a whole series on the other characters in the novel, but it kind of ruined it for me.

I was hoping for something more, and it failed to deliver.

Also editing-wise, she really needs someone to go add scene breaks! There were so many times it changes scenes suddenly, and it really throws me off.

This book has been in my to read pile for two years. Think it's the awful cover that's put me off. But now I've got round to reading it I have enjoyed it and bought book 2 in the series.
It's not perfect but it's enjoyable and has a different perspective from many historical as its about people in trade. 6 more in the series to read. Brilliant!
