"Married A Stripper" is fun, because it's not a woman who's the stripper (though the cover should be a solid clue about who's who in the relationship), but also because the characters are just so NICE. Piety (don't you love that name?) is the daughter of a very prominent man in political circles, and she's under constant pressure not to do anything which may reflect badly upon him. Lately her parents have been pressuring Piety to get married and settle down, but of course only with an "acceptable" man.
I bet you can tell how well THAT went, huh? And maybe you think you know exactly how this book will go from here... but I'll bet dollars to donuts that you're wrong.
Know why? Well, I'll tell you (without any inconsiderate spoilers of course): Piety is a good person. She's just NICE. She's also big-hearted, thoughtful, kind... and nobody's fool. Her personality is diametrically opposed to those of her parents. She doesn't care at all for politics, appearances, social climbing, etc. Over the course of the book you see that she's a very strong, well-grounded person.
And our Hero, Kaleb, is a sweetheart, too. He's got a serious problem he's trying to solve in the very best way that he can (again, no spoilers!), and he's willing to help Piety while he's at it, if he can. He's not a cliché, he's got real depth of character that I appreciate. He and Piety may have met by absolute blind, dumb luck, but they really click as a couple.
There's of course turbulence between them, but Piety and Kaleb are adults, and they act like it. There's no histrionics and blown-out-of-proportion-misunderstandings full of jealousy, spite, and anger. Yes, they misunderstand each other, but it's realistic, and neither of them holds a grudge. They don't immediately assume the other is the "Bad Guy", which is refreshing. (It's kind of sad, when you think about it... I mean, how many Romances have you read where the Hero/Heroine immediately lose all trust in their partner, assume the worst, and fly completely off the handle? Yikes... way too many. It's exhausting...)
Kaleb and Piety have a kind of "grownup" stability in their relationship that couple who've been together far longer don't always have. Is there suspense and action in this book? Definitely! But it's not the biggest draw for me. I just genuinely like characters that LIKE each other, and develop feelings for each other over time. Insta-love is done so often, and yes, the timeline for "Married a Stripper" is short, but it feels believable.
As always, you should expect quite a bit of "steam" in an MS Parker book - if you don't like to read sex scenes, you'll want to take a pass on this. But hey, you're reading a review of a book about marrying a Stripper, so one assumes you know (more or less) what you're in for.
