Without revealing any spoilers, there were a couple of things Maura did that upset me, but her actions made sense once everything was explained at the end. I ached for both Aiden and Maura when the "black moment" arrived, but I loved how everything was resolved. Maura's anniversary present to Aiden in the epilogue ended the book on just the right high note, and left me smiling.
Kudos to Ms. Gracen!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I actually had a hard time putting it down and found myself sneaking in a page or two every chance I had. Aiden was incredibly sweet. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a good looking guy with a heart of gold? Maura was also very likable. As a strong, independent, single mother, Maura was willing to do anything to keep Chloe safe. However, she was also very dedicated to her friendship with Aiden. Even before the proposal, they talked daily and spent time together regularly. Everyone around them could tell they were perfect for one another, so it wasn’t shocking at all that they would be able to pull off this marriage.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this story was that the author kept it very believable. They didn’t magically notice they were perfect for each other and fall madly in love while everything fell into place perfectly. They still had normal relationship issues and insecurities they had to work through and adjustments that had to be made as their relationship grew and developed into something new. The characters had flaws, and we saw them grow and develop throughout the book. Even the conflict with Niall was believable. It wasn’t over the top, nor was it solved easily and wrapped up in a neat little bow.
This book is book three in the McKinnon Brothers Romance series. I had not read the first two, but it wasn’t necessary to easily follow and enjoy this story. However, I enjoyed the writing so much I plan to check out the rest of the series. If the other McKinnons are as lovable as Aiden, it will be well worth it. Jennifer Gracen is definitely an author to watch.
This book does take place in Ireland, so be prepared for some Irish phrases. It, however, is very easy to follow. While it does allude to characters having sex, there are no explicit sex scenes included.
Single mom Maura Callahan was raising her daughter Chloe alone after her BF Niall hit her while she's pregnant and left one night and never came back. She's barely making do with a job that barely paid enough, while living back home with her mom and her daughter. The only one to talk to was her best friend Aidan. Aidan McKinnon was head of a social media company and had been there to see Maura fall for another man, her heartbreak, and her slow healing... He is Chloe's godfather after all. And he wanted out of the friend zone for a very long time, but was afraid it would break the friendship. When Chloe's father suddenly turned up one day and demanded shared custody, Aidan saw his chance... Marry Maura and adopt Chloe. But will she love him back?
The verbal spat near the end that caused the "darkest hour" was really lame, and Niall was just not a credible threat to the romance at all. And one wonders why don't Maura change her phone number. Niall just comes across as a creepy stalker, but never stepping out of line. BORING!!!!!
This was the first book that I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a sweet couple who reach a very happy ending together.
