I'll be honest here - I haven't gone through menopause. I don't know what it's like to have insomnia (or how you could possibly manage to have insomnia AND write a novel as incredible as this). I haven't shared many of the experiences that Amy Ferris talks about in her book, Marrying George Clooney. But, regardless of that, I connected with this book on such a deep level. I got choked up, I laughed out loud, I set out to write my own novel, I read parts aloud to anyone who would listen... I LOVE this book.

It's incredible to get to know someone on such a deeply personal level - let alone to reach that connection through a novel. But Amy lets us in on her secrets, shares her most joyful and sorrowful moments with us, and inspires us to get through those ups and downs with profound grace and humor.

I LOVED this book! The title was intriguing so I ordered it from Amazon not knowing how much I needed it. Being bed-bound with a nasty case of bronchitis, this book was a savior...laughter, giggling, aha moments and feeling like Amy Ferris was in bed talking directly to me...I have a new best friend...her CONFESSIONS were similar to many of my private thoughts and experiences - Share this book with your best friend or best enemy...everybody deserves the joy from the angst that this writer offers...BUT IT NOW!!!

The reviews are better than the book and misleading. As a mid-life, early peri-menopausal first time mom of an infant, I was hoping for some side-splitting relief from this book. Some of what Dolly Parton's character in Steel Magnolias called "laughter through tears". It is not that. Here are the random late night musings of someone piecing together bits of past and present while working through her issues. Mostly involving her mom's illness and their past relationship. It is poignant, heartfelt and touching. And I hope therapeutic for the author. But it is not hilarious by any means. Some bits will make you smile. Mostly it made me think, ruminate and get depressed which is not what I wanted from this book. It may be that I have lost my sense of humor. Wonder if Amazon sells a funny bone…

This week, "Marrying George Clooney: Confessions From a Midlife Crisis" by Amy Ferris, is hitting the bookstores. On the back will be my blurb of recommendation:

"Amy Ferris has successfully combined a rip-roaringly funny page-turner, with an unvarnished account of the personal history that formed her. This gut-wrenching look at intimate relationships will resonate with readers because of the universality of its raw emotion, clarity of vision and self-revealing courage."

Blurbs are relatively short, pithy comments on why a potential reader should pick up that particular book as opposed to the hundreds of others that are displayed besides it. It is an invitation. It also serves as a reference to those who have already taken the plunge, as they take a break from their reading to see if they are in sync with those who had the privilege of an advance look.

In my case, not only did I get to peruse the manuscript in its final form, I also witnessed its birth and evolution.

I met Amy Ferris at The Women's Media Center in 2005. We were part of the start-up team for a new venture founded by Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, and Robin Morgan. The goal was to ensure that women were more "visible and powerful in the media." The two of us were quite vocal about how important women's cultural contributions were - a necessity to honestly reflect women's stories in our society. As we laughed at each other's jokes, which we considered über hilarious, we forged a friendship.

Many of the issues we discussed in serious moments - family, relationships, and life changes - would find their way into Marrying George Clooney. Amy's writing voice is distinctive; first person conversational.

I just cannot understand all the reviews about loughing out loud etc..... I'm a woman, I'm 50, so I should be the one whom the book is written for. I'm over 20% now, but it wasn't enough for even one giggle, it's boring and the style... I feel like I was reading some article, say, in Glamour magazine written for teenagers. I stop reading that, there are lots of better books around.

I'm so glad I'm not Amy Ferris, except when I am, which is when I'm being bold, courageous, outrageous, and deeply, scary honest. Marrying George Clooney ... is not for sissies; it's for the rest of us, so we can squirm with recognition, lament a world that doesn't get us, snort-laugh at our absurdity, and feel that relief that comes with knowing we are not alone. Ferris also happens to write well - a bonus these days. So if you want to explore your own Amyness while enjoying a tender/crusty love story, read this book.

This is a book for women who celebrate their lives with story telling. And, truth telling. Cliches be damned, I did LOL more than a few times, and I will even admit that I almost wept at the conclusion. The tragedy of losing her mother to dementia just as they were beginning to know and accept each other as women was hard to read and I suspect that I will not be alone among my peer group to share that tragedy. It's an all-too-common occurrence for our generation.

Amy Ferris's sad, long distance reconciliation with her mother reminded me of a response the brilliant poet, Nikki Giovanni gave once when she was asked what she was grateful for. (In part) NG told her interviewer that she had survived cancer and she was glad that she did primarily because her survival enabled her to live long enough to reconcile with her mother.

I'll admit also that I am partial to writers who are willing to address, (arguably) the most primal relationship of all, that of a mother and her daughter, but to do so with such wit and candor and grace and searing honesty...oh my. Good, good stuff. This is what is meant by "writing your emotional truth".
