When American Jewish men intermarry, goes the common assumption, they and their families are "lost" to the Jewish religion. In this provocative book, Keren R. McGinity shows that it is not necessarily so. She looks at intermarriage and parenthood through the eyes of a post-World War II cohort of Jewish men and discovers what intermarriage has meant to them and their families. She finds that these husbands strive to bring up their children as Jewish without losing their heritage. Marrying Out argues that the "gendered ethnicity" of intermarried Jewish men, growing out of their religious and cultural background, enables them to raise Jewish children. McGinity's book is a major breakthrough in understanding Jewish men's experiences as husbands and fathers, how Christian women navigate their roles and identities while married to them, and what needs to change for American Jewry to flourish. Marrying Out is a must read for Jewish men and all the women who love them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In Marrying Out . . . historian Keren R. McGinity uses qualitative research to dismantle assumptions about the lives and attitudes of intermarried Jewish men."―Journal of Jewish Identities

"McGinity, a groundbreaking scholar, captures the telling details and the idiosyncratic trajectory of interfaith relationships and marriages in America. But as academic as McGinity's work is, it is also highly personal."―
The Forward

"[A] fresh and lucid look at intermarriage . . .McGinity integrates her findings with an impressive command of the social and historical research on intermarriage, making this book an important analysis of this thorny issue. . . .filled with vivid vignettes about intermarried couples."―
Jewish Book World

"In
Marrying Out . . . historian Keren R. McGinity uses qualitative research to dismantle assumptions about the lives and attitudes of intermarried Jewish men."―Journal of Jewish Identities

"[P]rovides a penetrative analysis of how Jewish men are not 'lost' to Jewish communities but rather shape their own identities as Jewish husbands and fathers."―
Marginalia

"A great many communally-involved families include Jewish men and non-Jewish women who have agreed to raise their children as Jews. Most of these women are passionately committed to raising Jewish children, fully cooperating in the Jewish education of their children, and are learning as much as they can about the Jewish faith and culture. As Jewish federations, synagogues, and JCCs expand outreach efforts, Keren McGinity provides a great deal of insight into the world of these very special and important interfaith households."―Barry Shrage, President, Combined Jewish Philanthropies

"This is the first book I have read that truly understands and supports Jewish men.
Marrying Out opens a window into the psyches of intermarried Jewish men. It also serves as a guide to Jewish professionals striving to build a successful volunteer culture and reinvigorate Jewish family life."―Rabbi Charles Simon, Executive Director, Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs

"The burning personal issue for most American Jews today concerns intermarriage. Keren McGinity gives us a fascinating, perceptive, and vivid portrayal of the wide range of Jewish identities shaped by exogamous marriages. Read this lively book if you want to understand the state of American Jewish life today."―Susannah Heschel, Dartmouth College

"Finally, a book that separates fact from fiction about Jewish men and intermarriage. This important contribution to the growing literature on intermarriage illuminates contemporary Jewish life and culture. This volume clearly demonstrates that Jewish men can definitely intermarry, maintain a strong Jewish identity, and raise self-identifying Jewish children."―Kerry M. Olitzky, Executive Director, Jewish Outreach Institute

in the Jewish religion any person that marries a non Jewish person is cutting themselves off from the Jews. Any child born from a non Jewish mother is not Jewish. Period. It sounds nice to say that you can connect to your heritage even while you marry out, but the truth is that playing dreidel and hanging an Israeli flag ,while nice , actually are not important . the most important thing is to marry someone Jewish so that your children can carry on their Jewish existence, this way there is still a chance at them continuing the Jewish legacy. Before marrying out, consult with someone that knows more about this than you do! Marry Jewish . If its not an important value for you ,do it for your children so that the Jewish nation will live on!

As an American Jewish parent who is concerned about the issue of intermarriage I found Keren McGinity's book about this subject both helpful and hopeful. This is a compelling analysis of a subject that has not had much scrutiny in the past - Jewish men marrying non-Jewish women. Through interviews with both men who had intermarried and their wives McGinity discerned patterns that emerged regarding the extent of their own Jewish involvement post marriage as well as the effect that the intermarriage was having on their children. It is comforting to learn that many Jewish men who marry non-Jewish women find positive ways to make their Jewish heritage relevant and meaningful for their families. McGinity's book is an excellent guide for anyone who cares about this issue and is looking for ways to understand better how an intermarriage can indeed result in a greater appreciation of Judaism for the Jewish partner, the non-Jewish partner and the children of that union.

Marrying Out is a must read for anyone who thinks (is concerned/ optimistic/pessimistic/curious) about the state of intermarriage in America. McGinity presents a fresh, lucid look at the challenges faced by Jewish men marrying non-Jewish women. She deftly weaves statistical data with personal narratives, demographic profiles with historical overviews, along with the influence of the arts and pop culture punctuated with humor and illustrative photographs. The result is a comprehensive and learned exploration of a complex, phenomenon in American Jewry. Worth noting, too, is McGinity's engaging writing style that manages to be scholarly without succumbing to academic jargon. Whether you agree with her prognosis and conclusions, or not - indeed, especially, if you do not - you need to read this important book to have a better understanding of what is afoot in contemporary American Jewry

This is wonderful new book shows that when a Jew marries someone who is not Jewish, their shared new journey can often lead to meaningful religious connections. It also shows that if you happen to be a Jewish man who married someone who is not Jewish, then it is up to you to be the best father, and the best Jewish father you could be.

Keren McGinity's new book expands on and complicates her previous study of intermarried Jewish women. Exploring the history of intermarried Jewish men, this book not only gives the reader a glimpse into the personal experience of men who chose to marry out, and of their spouses, but also puts these experiences within the broader context of gender's role in the Jewish community and American society at large. A fascinating read that exemplifies how great scholarship can be spread beyond academic circles.
