Marrying the Royal Marine Kindle Edition
As the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman, Polly Brandon has always felt like an ugly duckling. So she’s amazed when Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Philippe Junot pays her such close attention as they sail for Portugal. She knows this Royal Marine would never look at her under ordinary circumstances, but having his protection is more than a comfort . . . it is a pleasure.
Hugh is immediately taken with the spirited beauty aboard his ship. Her determination to assist with the war effort is admirable, and when she falls ill, he feels compelled to care for her. But Polly still has trouble believing what she sees in Hugh’s eyes—that she has turned from an ugly duckling into a desirable swan . . .

About the authors
I'm a long-time, award-winning novelist, perhaps best known for my Regency Romances, two of which have earned Rita Awards from Romance Writers of America. I've also been writing Mormon-themed novels, as well as historical fiction for Harlequin and CamelPress in Seattle. I have three Whitney Awards from LDStorymakers, and two Spur Awards from Western Writers of America, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award from Romantic Times (which makes me feel like I have one foot in the grave).
Current works available now are "The Christmas Angle," from A Country Christmas; "A Christmas Dance with the Rancher," from Harlequin's Western Christmas Proposals, and For This We Are Soldiers: Tales of the Frontier Army.
Out in February will be the fourth and final book in the Spanish Brand Series: "The Star in the Meadow." In March will be "Courting Carrie in Wonderland" for Cedar Fort, which I am writing now.
I'll soon be starting a series set at St. Edmunds School in Portsmouth, England in 1803, a direct result of my short story, "The Christmas Angle," which is newly available in A Country Christmas. I discovered I couldn't let go of those interesting characters.
I love to write. The whole process still fascinates me, even after many novels and short stories, and some non-fiction work. I'm still learning with every book.

Polly is a young woman on the way from England to see her sister in Portugal. Her sister and her husband run a hospital for British soldiers. They also take care of young Portuguese women and their babies. The women were raped by the French and the babies are the results of those rapes.
Hugh is a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Royal Marines. On the ship to Portugal, he is kind enough to help Polly. She is the only woman on the ship and she becomes very sea sick. After a couple of days, when it is realized she has been ill Hugh is the one who takes care of her, bathes her and helps her get back on her feet.
He falls in love with her when she is at her very worst. He admires her courage and strength. Polly appreciates him and begins to become attracted to this man who has tenderly cared for her when she was most in need of help.
Polly becomes immersed in the life at the hospital. And she soon joins a nun to take boat trips in country to rescue more young women who are in need.
When Hugh joins one of the boat trips with Polly and the nun to rescue a girl, they are captured by the French. It turns out the nun was a Portuguese spy.
Hugh and Polly are subjected to terrible conditions, and dragged along with the French soldiers.
During this time, Polly and Hugh learn about one another. The situation is one of danger and deprivation. There is no food and riding horses for days is a painful situation. Survival is the goal of every day.
Polly is a young woman who does not recognize her own worth in the world. She also does not realize that she has strength of character which will serve her well during the terrible times she will face.
Hugh has become a high ranking officer in the Marines because he is intelligent and capable of close observation about the world around him.
He has a good military mind. At times that is what keeps Polly and Hugh alive.
The story has adventure and danger. There is also humor and romance, as well as surprises.
Hugh is the perfect hero. And Polly is a beautiful young woman with a fine mind. They are good together.
Ms Kelly writes really terrific romantic stories.
Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Junot is the bored royal marine of the title. Bored and restless he may be, but he's not boring. On route from England to Portugal, he meets young Polly Brandon, the illegitimate daughter of nobility, on her way to visit her sister who helps run a naval hospital near the front. Junot is a character with character. He's at home on the water, Polly (whom he nicknames "Brandon") definitely is not. They are forced to ignore the constraints of socially acceptable behavior, first with Polly's seasickness, then when they are captured by the French and marched cross country as prisoners of war. Junot maintains his dignity at all times and helps Brandon do the same. Polly Brandon also shows exceptional character. She may have been captured, but she learns quickly how to stay alive when it isn't always obvious that she will. She doesn't turn into a squeamish girl or the stereotypical "too stupid to live" heroine. I liked that they both showed human emotions, neither one was a super hero, they were both scared, they both cried at times, they were strong when they needed to be. If you are looking for torrid sex scenes, you won't find them in this book, but that's not to say it isn't romantic. Hugh and Brandon are perfect for each other and their love grows naturally and they figure it out soon enough so "does he or doesn't he" is never part of the plot.
The plot is interesting and a somewhat realistic view of the horrors of war. It won't leave you sitting up at night with PTSD, but it doesn't sugar coat atrocities. Hugh is not the kind of leading man who is able to best all his enemies with might, but he's able to roll with the punches and figure out how to keep the two of them alive. Brandon doesn't let being female stand in the way of being heroic, nor does she let being English stand in the way of being human.
This is the third in a series, but I am not sure I can believe that the other two could be better than this one. This book will stay with me for a while and I will definitely be reading it again.
