Editorial Reviews

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Marrying Type by Laura Chapman. It caught me on page one and hooked me. It is one of those books that I just couldn't put down, partly because there was something happening on every page and partly because it was so well written."
- Readers' Favorite

"Author Laura Chapman wows with this very clever reimagining of Jane Austen's Persuasion. The lead characters, as well as the supporting ones, are well-fleshed out, the love story has a lot of heart and poignancy, and the reality show angle is just plain fun. Like the lucky bridesmaids in this book, readers will feel like they caught the bouquet when they pick up a copy of The Marrying Type."
- Tracie Banister, author of Twin Piques, In Need of Therapy, and Blame it on the Fame

"The Marrying Type is a fun, fast-paced novel bringing together romance, drama, and a leading lady you can't help but root for. Throw in a reality TV show I would totally binge-watch (if it wasn't fictional) and a cast of quirky characters and you've got an engaging read I couldn't put down. Laura Chapman's writing is full of humor and heart. Don't miss this one!"
- Cat Lavoie, author of Zoey & the Moment of Zen and Breaking the Rules

The Marrying Type is a "will they or won't they" romance novel.

Quick recap from the blurb:
Elliot works for her family's wedding planning company. When she discovers they are massively in debt, she has to do something she never dreamed of - agree to appear on a a reality TV show following wedding planners around the country. To add more stress to her life, the 'IT' wedding of the season, that she's agreed to plan, happens to be for the sister of the one who got away. The love of her life, Eric.

Like I said above, this is a true story of will they or won't they.

Eric is very cold and all business when he is reunited with Elliot.
Elliot is torn by her feelings, she still loves him, but she doesn't think it can ever be. She acts professional and courteous, but doesn't allow herself to even hope to rekindle their romance.

Reading their encounters during the wedding planning was fun and at times frustrating. Both were too stubborn to give in to admit how they truly felt, and misunderstandings ran amok.

If you're in the mood for a cute, fun, summer read, this is the book.

Life for Elliot Lynch is like riding on a roller coaster - gradual ups, with steep rushes into despair, and then the gentle skip along the track of life where one catches their breath, knowing that a steep climb is about to begin again.

Elliot runs the family wedding planning business, Engagements. Once her mothers vision - it is now Elliot's legacy, and one she aims to make work. Putting in the blood, sweat, and tears, Elliot gives the business her all, but it seems that may not be enough.

With debt to pay-off, Elliot allows her cousin - who produces Reality TV shows - to follow her through the trials and tribulations of wedding planning - including the wedding of her ex-fiancé's sister, in return for a hefty fee. Not having seen "him" in years, Elliot's nerves, which are already jangling, stretch to their limits once he arrives on the scene.

There is a large cast of characters - many quite quirky and hilarious. Some very interesting twists and turns - one quite unexpected.

Each chapter begins with a lovely quote on the state of marriage. It is my opinion that Ms. Chapman has done a fabulous job at marrying the best blend of romance with regret, life with fantasy, and past with present.

I wonder what this book would be like to read on the beach, whilst on your honeymoon... A great read - a great escape.

review for Chick Lit Central (

Having read and reviewed Laura Chapman’s Hard Hats and Doormats, I was honored and very excited to be given the opportunity to read her latest novel, The Marrying Type.

Always the wedding planner, never a bride, Elliot Lynch is famous for orchestrating the splashiest weddings in Charleston, South Carolina. When her father’s sloppy management practices leave them on the brink of bankruptcy, Elliot will do whatever it takes to save the family business. When asked to appear on “The Marrying Type,” a reality TV show about the people behind the scenes as couples exchange I dos, she says yes to the invasion of privacy (and the hefty paycheck that comes with it).

With a camera crew capturing every detail of her life, Elliot faces her most challenging contract yet: planning a wedding where her ex is involved in every part of the process. Add in a lazy assistant, liquor-loving bridesmaid, and rival planner encroaching on her turf, and Elliot’s wedding season goes from high-end to high-stress.

Forced to confront her past, Elliot must live out her troubled present on national TV if she has any hope of saving her future. (courtesy of Amazon)

I am a huge reality TV buff, and I felt I received a back-stage pass to a lot of the drama and chaos that ensues for Elliot while she attempts to save her family business, one bride at a time. She is constantly putting out fires, including her own. Then there’s the ex. Eric Warner had been “the one” for Elliot, years ago, before she ended things and not amicably, I might add. Who would have ever guessed that one of the brides-to-be who Elliot will work closely with, would end up being Eric’s sister?

I felt emotionally invested in Elliot.

Wow. I absolutely adored this charming novel. Laura Chapman knows how to write angst and a slow-burning, keep you waiting on the edge of your couch, romance. It was so romantic, so sweet, and very witty too. Elliot was a doll and Eric...well, can someone please find me Eric's unattached clone, please? Each time I questioned something and thought perhaps the author could have developed something better, the answer was on the next page. She was a step ahead of me and I truly devoured this book until the last page. Totally choked up several times too!

Very impressed with the author's sophomore novel and looking forward to whatever she has next.

I was completely engrossed from the beginning of this book. Ms. Chapman's writing is humorous and highly engaging - and the plot will keep you turning those pages! Elliot has spent her life learning how to plan the perfect wedding, but has had trouble finding her own happily ever after. With her family's wedding planning business crumbling before her very eyes, she throws herself into her work with a determination so fierce, it will make your head spin! When all else fails, Elliot agrees to allow her cousin to film the inner workings of the family business for a reality show, which throws her into the path of the one who got away. Excitement abounds, emotion runs high and you won't get much sleep once you pick up this book! Be prepared for a lot of laughs, a few tears and a charming cast of characters.
