Blog postI was having a conversation last week, or it could have been the last month-who remembers what even time is anymore, right? What were we talking about? I mean, of course, it was writing.
I was telling her the last line of my WIP is the main character telling the love of his life that they would never have to come back to the place they just escaped. But then the first line in the next book would be “Look, I know what I said, but…”

Blog postThis is a little bit on my novel in progress, "The Night Was Not." The first bit is just a little context:
Kerry Hazard thought he had escaped the city of Margrave as a child. He stowed away on an airship and thought he was free. Yet, years later, as Captain of his own ship, unfinished business drags him back.
Jace Seabring, a man Kerry could have loved, turns up dead in one of the filthy canals in the old city, under mysterious circumstances. Driven by thoughts of w2 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postThis morning, early, I had the best dream. I was at my mom’s house, and she was there too. She had a bunch of stuff for me to take home with me that she’d found packed away that I’d left behind. It was all laid out on her dining room table. Everything in the house was just the way it used to be. Her dining room with all its burgundy and pink, the stained-glass birds that dad made stuck up in the picture window, which looked out on the side garden. Blog postI have spent the last few weeks helping to make masks. My roommate has produced hundreds. I just sewed what she told me to. I was hesitant to sit down at a machine---I inherited three from my mother, all when she was alive. She never could turn down a fancier one. And I got all the cast-offs. I used to sew every day, dolls, bags, a few clothes here and there.
But it turns out, I miss that. Not the showing of part, but the other part, no matter what weird thing it was, she was proud of11 months ago Read more -
Blog postI know, I know. I promised the sequel to Speak My Name at the beginning of this month. I mean, I wasn't worried. It was half written, right? So I was pretty sure I could do it in two months.
Okay, so someday I'll be able to be that person that can look at things logically while I'm writing them. But today is not that day. I needed help, to find the holes in my story, to find places to put context in. So this post is really about how important it is to me to have readers, listeners, ed1 year ago Read more -

Blog postI met Catherine Lundoff long ago at my first Wiscon. Actually the thing I remember most about that con was attending her reading. The short story she read that night was so compelling that I went home with that volume of sort stories. I can't wait to get my hands on Unfinished Business this week! Here's Catherine below, with all the details, and an excerpt. Enjoy!

Blog postI just wrote a blog about selling books for the Flint Area Writers blog. Really, it was about selling my own books, and how uncomfortable that can be. (Read that blog here). But also, it was about Impostor Syndrome. Yes. I said it.
I have that. A lot.
So much so that I don't feel qualified to even write about it, but here we are.
For example, I have two friends that are also writers, that I inadvertently and constantly measure myself by. They are both full time writers2 years ago Read more -

Blog postWhen people asked me, in my former life, to recommend a book, I had two lists in my head. The first were the sure sales, the easy ones. Neil Gaiman, if the customer showed even a slight inclination toward magic, Stephen King. You get the idea. The second list was for people that came back to see me. It was my list of authors that changed my life.
Top of that list was Charles de Lint. I came to him in the late 1980’s, with his collection first collection of short stories, Dreams Underf2 years ago Read more -
Blog post,Wednesday, January 13, 2016,,,, I'm not sorry that David Bowie is dead. I mean, I've seen enough people suffer to the end of their lives. I don't wish it on anyone. Certainly not on a man that I owe so much to. I do feel for his children. I just lost a father, and I didn't even want to be the one to call the family. I can't imagine how hard it was for his son to tell the world. Now, this is the place where I tell you that I'm not crazy. I didn't know the man. ,,Yet, I got the news at thre2 years ago Read more

Blog postYesterday was the very first day that I felt October. I mean really felt it tapping on my shoulder. I know it's almost November, but I've only just put my shorts and sundresses away. Two weeks ago it was 88 degrees here.
Yesterday. The wind blustered and the sky roiled with heavy black clouds. The sun was brief but brilliant, and most of the day was full of big fat raindrops and golden leaves that spiraled straight down the street.

Blog postTigger warning: rape and rape denial
Why did I never tell?
I’m sick of that question. Why didn’t I tell that I was raped? Twice? Because it was twenty years before I could say that word out loud without throwing up.
Because the first time, I had no idea what was happening. I was 12 years old, and it was the seventies. My parents—all the parents trusted and liked this man, who enjoyed the company of little girls. But I was sick when I got home from “playing,” and began2 years ago Read more -

Blog postHave I mentioned that I'm working on a prequel to Black Light? It's true. It's for anyone who ever wondered where Albrecht Christian came from.
In Black Light we meet him as a man who appears to be in his forties, haunted by his past. He chooses Trace to fill the void he feels.
When I began Black Light I was Trace's age. Albrecht Christian was the oldest person I could imagine. I thought he was the villain of the book.

Now he’s the sole tender of Darks, a bar at the edge of reality that is owned by hell. He longs for the company of his brother demons, the scorch of Lucifer’s heat. Instead he spends his nights serving drinks, tempting souls. Every night that passes is the same night. Each human that stumbles in is the same. Lost. Desperate.
Mica is neither of those things. Human, but able to see through Frank to all his true forms. Mica seems sure of what he wants; not a savior, not an annihilator of souls. He wants Frank.
But Frank is still tethered to Lucifer and Hell, and he knows that demons are made for destruction, torment, not love. Until Mica touches him, he’s never wanted for more. For Frank to find the humanity he needs to return Mica’s love, he must travel back to the depths of hell to break the bond Lucifer set in his heart. But when he gets there, Lucifer has already released Frank. Now his attention is fixed on Mica’s soul.
