If you take the individual chemicals in it and look them up on the internet, chances are you'll never use it.
I'm going to try to post some of the items that I've made with both the Silver Guilding and Gold Guilding.
Don't let the chemicals scare you away. Just take precautions.
After finishing the gold coats and waiting another 24 hours, I sealed them with the Martha Stewart Sprayable Enamel (I noticed that the product was made from suspended copper and thus could tarnish - the sprayable enamel was recommended on the gilding bottle to protect the finish). I had put so much work into these that I decided to go ahead and buy the exact product recommended so I wanted it to be perfect even though it was 3-4x more expensive than any other finishing product available. Even with careful handling, the frames chiped very easily both before and after I sealed them. To make matters worse, the enamel spray turned the liquid gilding copper colored the moment it touched and left red streaks. I followed every single instruction provided and am beyond disappointed that after a considerable amount of work the very product that was supposed to protect the finish ruined it. I wrote to the company that manufactures the products (Plaid) and after a few weeks they wrote me a generic email telling me to call them to talk about how to use the product. This was a complete waste of money and time.
While all varieties use copper particles, they come in different tones--my guess is that is controlled by particle size.
It goes on to plastic easily, and doesn't really need more than one coat. It dries to the touch within a few hours, although it takes a day or so to completely dry.
One note: the stuff is quite flammable, even when completely dry. It's not explosive at that point, but will burn much more readily than, say, wood.
You should also realize that 0.75 ounces doesn't go very far. A few paperweight sized objects will exhaust the bottle.
Other reviewers mentioned that it is toxic and that is NO JOKE. If you're pregnant (or even if you're not!), you should definitely considering using one of these: 3M Paint Project Respirator, Medium
The light masks won't work... you honestly need something this heavy duty. Although, I was painting on a wall and so the paint was closer to my face... but even my husband commented when he got home that the house smelled like heavy duty paint.
