This turns even the cheapest items, i.e. ceramics, glass, into gorgeous items. Beware though. It's highly toxic. I have to use a respirator and gloves when working with this stuff. It's definitely worth the inconvenience. Also, have plenty of ventilation and keep the kids and animals out of the room you're working in. I'm not one to have phobias about chemicals or odors, but this one contains many cancer-causing chemicals and the first time I used it without a respirator, I couldn't take more than five minutes inhaling it.

If you take the individual chemicals in it and look them up on the internet, chances are you'll never use it.

I'm going to try to post some of the items that I've made with both the Silver Guilding and Gold Guilding.

Don't let the chemicals scare you away. Just take precautions.

Color: Gold
I recently purchased some Martha Steward Liquid Gilding in gold to make a photo wall personal. I carefully read the instructions about the types of surfaces and the preparation and selected solid wood picture frames as a result. After making sure they were primed and ready I applied three coats of liquid gilding to parts of each frame leaving 24 hours between coats to fully dry.

After finishing the gold coats and waiting another 24 hours, I sealed them with the Martha Stewart Sprayable Enamel (I noticed that the product was made from suspended copper and thus could tarnish - the sprayable enamel was recommended on the gilding bottle to protect the finish). I had put so much work into these that I decided to go ahead and buy the exact product recommended so I wanted it to be perfect even though it was 3-4x more expensive than any other finishing product available. Even with careful handling, the frames chiped very easily both before and after I sealed them. To make matters worse, the enamel spray turned the liquid gilding copper colored the moment it touched and left red streaks. I followed every single instruction provided and am beyond disappointed that after a considerable amount of work the very product that was supposed to protect the finish ruined it. I wrote to the company that manufactures the products (Plaid) and after a few weeks they wrote me a generic email telling me to call them to talk about how to use the product. This was a complete waste of money and time.

This stuff consists of tiny copper particles suspended in an organic solvent. Paint it on a material, let the solvent evaporate, and the result is a metal coating. It shines like metal because it is metal.

While all varieties use copper particles, they come in different tones--my guess is that is controlled by particle size.

It goes on to plastic easily, and doesn't really need more than one coat. It dries to the touch within a few hours, although it takes a day or so to completely dry.

One note: the stuff is quite flammable, even when completely dry. It's not explosive at that point, but will burn much more readily than, say, wood.

You should also realize that 0.75 ounces doesn't go very far. A few paperweight sized objects will exhaust the bottle.

If I could give this 11 stars I would! I am a lifelong crafter and I've probably tried every single metallic paint. And I love this paint!! This was my second purchase of it- which says a lot when I have a lot of craft supplies I didn't like much still haunting my craft closet. It is quality and great thickness and cover- you can actually see a lustrous reflection in the shine. The color of the gold is beautiful! not too light or too green. And Amazon is a way better price than in stores

I used this to paint a quote on my nursery wall and I love how it turned out! It was pretty easy to work with... you have to give it a good shake before using it. The shimmer is beautiful! Exactly what I was looking for...

Other reviewers mentioned that it is toxic and that is NO JOKE. If you're pregnant (or even if you're not!), you should definitely considering using one of these: 3M Paint Project Respirator, Medium

The light masks won't work... you honestly need something this heavy duty. Although, I was painting on a wall and so the paint was closer to my face... but even my husband commented when he got home that the house smelled like heavy duty paint.

I have the Silver, Gold and Copper liquid gilding. The Silver and Gold give the most stunning results but the Copper gilding liquid separates and doesn't look nice on the finished product. It has to be stirred every time you put your brush in which is messy and too frequent to be practical. I have found for good copper results the gilding sheets are better.

This gold leaf paint is so easy to apply and so stunning! It is shiny like metal once dried, and a very pure gold in color. I used this on some agate slices with bumpy edges to "frame" the agate colors and the paint went over each nook and cranny seamlessly. The container is pretty small, but a little goes a LONG way. I tried regular gold leaf before this and found it so frustrating and impossible to apply to non-smooth surfaces, and this gold paint is so beautiful and perfect for so many projects. Highly recommend. :) It's been over a year since I painted those agate necklaces and the gold is still as brilliant, shiny and unchipped as when I first applied the paint.
