Q&A with Andy Weir

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Terrific stuff, a crackling good read that devotees of space travel will devour like candy…succeeds on several levels and for a variety of reasons, not least of which is its surprising plausibility.”—USA Today

An impressively geeky debut…the technical details keep the story relentlessly precise and the suspense ramped up. And really, how can anyone not root for a regular dude to prove the U-S-A still has the Right Stuff?”--Entertainment Weekly

Gripping…[features] a hero who can solve almost every problem while still being hilarious. It’s hard not to be swept up in [Weir’s] vision and root for every one of these characters. Grade: A.”—AVClub.com

"
A gripping tale of survival in space [that] harkens back to the early days of science fiction by masters such as Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke."--San Jose Mercury News

One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. It feels so real it could almost be nonfiction, and yet it has the narrative drive and power of a rocket launch. This is Apollo 13 times ten.”
--Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Impact and Blasphemy

A book I just couldn’t put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like “MacGyver” meets “Mysterious Island.”

Daniel H. Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of Robopocalypse

—Patrick Lee, New York Times bestselling author of The Breach and Ghost Country

"Strong, resilent, and gutsy. It's Robinson Crusoe on Mars, 21st century style.  Set aside a chunk of free time when you start this one.  You're going to need it because you won't want to put it down."
—Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of The King’s Deception and The Columbus Affair

Weir displays a virtuosic ability to write about highly technical situations without leaving readers far behind. The result is a story that is as plausible as it is compelling.”—Kirkus

"
Weir combines the heart-stopping with the humorous in this brilliant debut novel...by placing a nail-biting life-and-death situation on Mars and adding a snarky and wise-cracking nerdy hero, Weir has created the perfect mix of action and space adventure."--Library Journal (starred)

I read the original edition a few years ago and loved it. I was thrilled when I found out there was a classroom edition so I could try it out on my boys. The sporty guy. . . "Booorinng!" But my twelve year old tinkerer who will never, ever read unless by direct order, started grabbing it and sneaking away to read ahead of me! Second book ever (the first was Holes). Really, I tried to get a thorough report of why he likes it, but all I got was, ''It's interesting. He's funny (the main character Mark Watney). I've never read anything like it."
So yeah, it's filled with technical terms and ideas, but the solutions that are engineered are fascinating. It's like Robinson Crusoe in space. And the humor really is great.
As someone who has read the original, and this one, I can tell you that there is still a little language, but enough potty mouth has been cleaned up, and it doesn't affect the story at all.

It’s tough to get comprehensive and comprehendible explanations of science in a movie. I had seen the Martian, and suspected there was some really cool science behind it. My curiosity was satisfied in the book! I kept thinking I would get bored “anytime now,” but I was never bored. The main character’s sense of humor, of course, is one of the highlights of this story, as with other Andy Weir novels. I learned something from that too! I’m usually a “straight man“ and I needed a little schooling in humor. I don’t think I’d like being on Mars, but I sure liked this book.

This is a real fun thrill ride, I wish I had read it sooner. Any time a book is hard to put down, that is a winner. Great survival/human spirit book. Check it out.

Described as the Casraway, but on Mars, this is the good story about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars during the 3rd NASA manned mission to Mars.

Thought killed by a freak accident during a severe sand storm, Mark Whitney, the main character in the story, is left behind by his crew mates. He then has to develop clever and ingenious ways to survive until either a rescue mission can be sent or he can rendezvous with the next NASA mission to Mars.

Whitney goes through phases where he is on his own, has tenuous communication with NASA that breaks down at a critical moment, yet manages to solve each problem with expert application of physics, chemistry and engineering.

I thought this was a very good tale on what our first extraterrestrial explorations may be like: there are no make believe aliens invading earth and human civilization has not been destroyed. It’s just the story of a lone survivor trying to stay alive. I recommend this book to anyone who really likes science.

I almost skipped right over this one cuz I didnt get into the movie very much. I'm glad I decided to give it a try. As with nearly every book made into a movie, the book WAS EONS BETTER & I absolutely LOVED this book. What I loved most was the science (broken down to the basics) that he used to save himself until he could be rescued.
The book kept me interested better than the movie did!! I would definitely recommend this book.

This is one of the rare times I saw the movie before I read the book . I can honestly say I enjoyed them both! It was worth every second and many thanks for the journey!

I was originally apprehensive about reading The Martian. I had watched the movie and loved it, but I was nervous the book wouldn’t add anything beyond what I already knew. Why pay for the book when you already watched the movie, right? Wrong! I am so glad I picked up this book, and I can say with 100% certainty that it is worth it, even if you’ve already seen the movie and basically know what happens. I loved it so much that I stayed up until 5 a.m. reading. That is WAY past my bedtime, but I just couldn’t put it down.

Space travel is not an easy topic to understand on the best of days, but Andy Weir makes it seem almost trivial in the way that he explains the basic principles behind each hurdle Watney faces. You can tell this book is incredibly well-researched, which makes sense considering Weir worked as a computer scientist for most of his life and just plain loves science. Time and again, Weir somehow takes an extremely unrelatable situation and makes it relatable for the average Joe.

One of the most enjoyable things about reading this book for me was the humor! The best way I can describe Watney is sarcastically optimistic, which is a great personality trait to have when you’re trying to survive on Mars. Watney is just a fantastic, hilarious character that immediately had me rooting for him and fully engaged from page 1.

I truly cannot think of one thing I did not love about this book and am delighted to give it a full 5-star rating. I highly recommend it to everyone, even if you’re not a fan of science. I can guarantee that after this book you will be!

One of the best written books I've read. I'm glad they released a class version without the F word so I could use it in high school classes.

Some chapters man wins and others Mars kicks his butt. The characters's personalities will make you want to reread this over and over again. The science in the book is very accurate to what we believe a Mars trip would involve. Overall a great read.
