Whether you're a seasoned professional, or a picker-in-training, the Martin X Series DX1AE has got your musical bases covered, with killer craftsmanship, Fishman electronics, and striking beauty. Martin guitars from the X series feature patented high pressure laminate (HPL) back and sides with a solid Sitka spruce top, patented mortise and tenon neck construction, and professionally installed Fishman electronics. The result: great-sounding, great-playing guitars, that are environmentally friendly, and priced to fly out the door. This is one of Martin's best values ever. The X Series affirms Martin's commitment to providing an affordable and competitive option to players dedicated to live performance. The 6-string Martin DX1AE acoustic-electric guitar features a D-14 platform, a dreadnought body design producing big, round sound. Pairing the Sitka spruce top with the mahogany-pattern HPL back and sides, the Martin DX1AE belts out rich clarity and plenty of projection. The mortise and tennon neck joint ensures solid construction of the instrument, with optimal resonant tone, while eliminating drop-off in the finer dynamics. The Martin guitar's stratabond neck is a multilayered wood creation, bonding layers of wood under extremely high pressure. The material is then carved and finished in a conventional manner. The end result is a very strong neck that provides definition and articulate sustain from note to note. The modified low oval neck shape, 25.4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, and 16" radius provide comfort and dexterity when performing intricate movements and progressions along the black Richlite fretboard. The Martin DX1AE guitar features proven Sonicore pick-up technology with the Fishman Sonitone system featuring "easy access" volume and tone controls conveniently and strategically located just inside the sound hole. Dressed in a satin finish and featuring chrome tuners, chrome hardware, this acoustic electric guitar has the look and sound of a highly collecti...

The top spruce on the guitar is a nice light color as shown, with pretty much no polish. It is hand buffed, which means it is more porous. I will come back to this later. The back and sides are HPL, it is pretty sturdy stuff and from what I can tell, would take bumps well if your intention is to use it as a "beater" guitar at gigs. The Richlite is dark and overall lends to a solid, heavy weight to the guitar. The neck is smooth and comfortable to play on, it doesn't stick, and the Richlite fret board is very smooth on the fingers. The action was pretty comfortable for my fingers, but I had a luthier lower the action some more since I was starting from scratch again as far as building callouses on my finger tips. This helped the ease of play tremendously and I highly recommend you doing this if you are new to playing. Just take it to a reputable guitar center and they can hook you up.
After the first month I changed the strings to Elixir 11052 Acoustic 80/20 Bronze Guitar Strings with Nanoweber Coating, Light (.012-.053) Light strings are recommended for this guitar, and the Elixir strings combined with using GHS Fast Fret String and Neck Lubricant really makes the fret board slide easily and play very clearly. Keep your strings clean after every use, you will thank me later. After receiving a discount on a Fender Acoustasonic 90- 90 Watt Acoustic Guitar Amplifier, I was able to test the Fishman pickup built into the guitar. Wow, you think the guitar sounds good naturally, wait until you plug it in. Being able to fine tune the sound of this guitar puts it up with far more expensive guitars, and believe me I tested many many guitars, for the price this guitar is giving you great value.
So time went on and it was time to clean the guitar. I went to the Martin official website to learn what they recommended for care of their guitars. I will share what I learned with you here since one particular question I had answered by the customer service team. Remember the front is just hand buffed spruce, no polish. The Martin video of guitar care recommends using Dr. Duck 2080 Ax Wax Cleaning Kit, but specifically mentioned not using any polishes on their X series guitars, which this guitar is. There was no mention, however, of what product to use. Ax Wax is completely safe to use on the sides, back, neck, frets, headpiece, etc. Basically anything BUT the front. So what to do with the front? The only advice I could find was a clean damp cloth and wiping it down. So I ask their customer service. After a few days I was emailed back with a friendly response. I was correct that Ax Wax was safe on everything but the front of the guitar. For the front they recommended S C JOHNSON WAX 00125 Johnson Wood Wax, 22-Ounce.
That covered cleaning but I learned more about guitar care. Keep it in a hardshell case, such as Martin 640 Dreadnought Hardshell Case. And keep it humidified. Any humidifier system will help but I went with an in case monitor and humidifier as follows, Music Nomad MN305 HumiReader Hygrometer, Humidity, and Temperature Monitor and Music Nomad MN300 Humitar Acoustic Guitar Humidifier. Both products have functioned very well for my conditions, your mileage may vary depending on where you live. But since you invested in the guitar, you should take care of it properly. Although HPL and the neck of this guitar are very resistant to humidity changes, your front is not. Keep the front humidified and it will stay in good shape a long, long time.
So months later I am now very comfortable with my guitar, it plays beautifully. Better than I can play it to be sure, but I am getting there. It is a Martin, and deservedly the label. My experienced guitar friends love to play with it. In fact, some have started looking at how I care for it and are now better taking care of theirs. I hope this helps you make a decision, and especially helps any new player better understand the what's and why's of owning a guitar.
