You probably haven't heard of Marumi. The company doesn't have the high profile that B+W or Hoya enjoy. That's our good fortune, as the filters are totally on the same quality level and can be had for a lot less money.

This works nicely. I don't get the magenta tint that some cheaper variable ND filters offer. There's not any visible distortion or banding. As with any filter that gets as dark as this one, it's necessary to meter at a lower density, then calculate exposure for maximum density. The filter simply makes the view too dark for most cameras to accurately meter. That's not a fault, just physics.

I got this filter and got really annoyed with the fact that it had black bars across the screen at the higher setting. I went to the reviews on the same filter, larger 77mm size and found that a customer there complained of same thing. And so I returned the filter thinking that it was defective or just bogus merchandise. AND then I talked to a photography friend who told me that when they make variable ND filters, they use two filters..."What you are seeing is not a defect but an effect of how the product is constructed. This type of filter is constructed of two Linear Polarizers. When the filter is turned all the way in one direction the two Polarizers will cross over each other and will see an "X" in your image. To correct just turn the ring back in the other direction." Wooops!! And so PROMASTER offers the HGX Variable ND Filter. This filter has block inside which keep the Polarizers from crossing over and thus avoiding the 'bars'...not sure if Marumi makes one...but I mean gee whiz, dont ya think that they would tell you about this before you bought it. I was taking pics and having a grand old time and then suddenly the "BLACK BARS"...at first I thought something had gone wrong with my camera!!! And so exactly 15 minutes after I returned the filter to the Post office to get my money back from Amazon, my friend tells me all of this. At any rate, I hope you read this as a word of encouragement. HOWEVER, that being said, my research following this incident also led me to an understanding that if you want really good outcomes, you need to get good glass...and for ND filters, either you pay an arm and a leg for a variable Singh Ray or get the increasingly harder to get Lee Big Stopper, or you just get a really good B+W German made 1-10 stop filter, non variable...these are made with excellent glass, get the multi coated version, easier to clean and only a few bucks more. Being able to stop down and take pics of streams and water in general is amazing, worth the bucks for sure!!! But then I saw a youtube about variable ND filters and the Singh Ray and Heliopans, for the money are not so much worth the bucks. Tiffen or Marumi are less expensive and do the job without losing the sharpness of your $10,000 Leica lens. And so I got a B+W non variable 10 stop filter but it is a bugger to have to screw it on and off before and after each shot...I will buy another Marumi I guess.

I used to own Marumi filters when shooting film 25 - 30 years ago and liked them. When I was looking for a good variable ND filter for my new camera I came across this. It received good write ups elsewhere so I gave it a try. Very pleased with the results. You may need to stay away from the very high end of the filter but for all the normal uses I had good results.

I own some Marumi ND filters, and I'm very pleased with their performance. This variable ND filter works well for the lower half of its range, but the upper half has the dreaded bar that appears in the image. I was aware of the X pattern that appears in all variable ND filters when rotated to their maximum setting. However, a dark bar shows up very early in the rotation of the filter, which limits its use to only the first half, or less, of the range. I have a cheap variable ND filter than doesn't create any bar until 3/4 of the range, so I was hoping for more range with the Marumi variable ND. I would recommend this filter for the price, but just be aware that the ND range is limited.

This filter does what it says it will. It's well constructed and optically ideal.

Note this one line in the description: "To help prevent Vignetting the front filter ring is one size larger, ie 72mm."

That means you will need to buy a 72mm lens cap, if you are going to leave this filter on the camera during a shoot and want to have a lens cap that will cover it and protect it.

On the one hand, the size helps with what they say (vignetting). On the other, if you are buying this for a 67mm filter size lens (which of course you are!), you cannot just plan to use your old lens cap on this filter, which is a little annoying.

Lens caps are cheap, so including one with this filter would have been good. It's a premium filter, so why not? This is similar to how B&W makes some filters which are VERY thin (again to prevent vignetting) which don't even have threads on the front of them (because of the thin ness). So B&W includes a friction hold lens cap with their filter. Very smart and nice.

Now I gotta hassle with the time and silly expense of ordering and shipping a cheap 72mm lens cap. So, one star off for not including one with the filter. This is a premium filter. Adding 25 cents to the wholesale cost would not break anyone, and would be a very nice gesture.

I like this filter a lot as it's a lot smaller than hauling around gels. I'm using it on a Zeiss 16-35 zoom (sony) and I can get roughly 2 stops before the pattern on the filter starts distorting the image with the lens set to 16mm (you get an X pattern across the frame if you try to get too dark), but zooming the lens to 35mm gets rid of the pattern and probably gets you close to 9 stops - I have not really tested this yet though. With the lens set to 16mm, I do not get any vignette as the the glass is a few mm wider than 72mm. The front of the filter is threaded but is wider than 72mm (not sure what the size is) - something to keep in mind if you want to stack another filter on it. The seller I used was based in Hong Kong so the price was about half (~$50) of the US seller prices - very good value for the money.
