Editorial Reviews

Format: DVD
When Mexican president Jose Lopez Portillo's sister, Margarita, was head of the RTC (Radio, Television & Cinematography). the precusor to IMCINE, she greenlighted a handful of controversial and thematically interesting films that were well above the usual commercial fare. ACTAS DE MARUSIA or LETTERS FROM MARUSIA was one of these.

Exiled Chilean director, Migel Littin (THE JACKAL OF NAHUALTORO, THE PROMISED LAND), makes an angry political statement about his country with LETTERS. The story centers around copper miners that were brutally suppressed by the military at the behest of the British-owners in 1907. The movie is quite violent, but understandably so with the 1973 coup very much in mind.

The international cast is headed by the great Italian actor Gian Maria Volonte and Diana Bracho who eventually became a one of Mexico's top actresses.

LETTERS received an Academy Award nomitaion for Best Foreingn Language Film in 1975 but was not released commercially in the United States until 1977.

Excellent film in DVD format
A very potent persentation of the terrible conditions of exploitation in Chile of miners and their families working and living in the saltpeter mines (Salitreras) in the Desierto de Atacama. Illustration of the connivence of politicians, armed forces and foreing commercial interests.
