"Snobby elitism has been used against me and my love of certain things in pop culture. In the case of my comic book fandom, that would mean my adoration of Marvel's Secret Wars series. The fights are fun and everyone gets their moment, whether it's Hulk holding up an ENTIRE MOUNTAIN to save his teammates, or Spider-Man outfoxing the X-Men who operate as a pseudo-rogue third party based on how the heroes mistrust the mutants. On the villains side, watching all of these immense egos try to get along is more entertaining than any season of the Real World." -- Mark Ginocchio
"Secret Wars was the original 12-part mega-epic. All of the major players from Marvel were involved, from Spider-Man to Dr. Doom, from Wolverine to Galactus. All taken to a strange new world which the characters call Battleworld. What ensues is an all-out Marvel Superhero millitary campaign. With fun developments along the way: Spider-Man's Black Costume, the introduction of a new Spider-Woman ... all had far reaching impact on future Marvel books. This is one of those stories you can read for the pure enjoyment of reading." -- David Suiter
"Secret Wars II is also the story of another all-powerful being ... the Molecule Man. Short, meek, unassuming, but blessed with powers almost akin to the Beyonder ... his struggles to maintain a balance and equilibrium between himself and the world around him serve as a signpost and a warning to The Beyonder. I can see his appeal to me when I was younger ... but there is a tremendous amount of nuance writers Jim Shooter and Roger Stern bring to the character that help him resonate even with my adult self." -- Brett Beach
"Secret Wars II doesn't always feel like your typical comic book. Instead, it gives off the feeling of a character study with a real philosophical edge. How does an all powerful being, a god, find satisfaction? The Beyonder has the power to do anything he wants, create any life he wants, manipulate the feelings of anyone he chooses, yet he is clearly unhappy. [The story] holds up well enough ... I would recommend the crossovers [for] a more fulfilling experience." -- Frankie Torres
"The summer blockbuster of comics" -- Vernon Clark Mayo
"Marvel had always interwoven characters and storylines through its different comic series ... [but] the idea of placing so many different heroes and villains into one smashingly cool story-line was new, and THAT'S what makes Secret Wars a groundbreaker." -- Susan Bueti

This set is similar in nature as the actual box is very ornate with drawings of what seems like a million Marvel characters. the box/ slipcase comes with a side opening which when pulled, opens up both the side of box/ slipcase as well as the front of the box. The 11 books inside are sealed and are kept in place with a snug fit.
You can read exact contents from other reviewers, but it is easy to say, it contains ALL the Secrets Wars and Secret wars 2 tie-ins. EXCEPT Rom and one other licensed property Marvel no longer has . The books themselves are not oversized and they do not have dust jackets. Instead (like the Marvel Firsts Box Set) they have meticulous artwork on the front and back covers. However, in my opinion, the Marvel Firsts covers were very Cheesy and really didn't look very good. These look great, often using actual covers from Secret Wars Issues.
Dividing all that is Secrets Wars into 11 books makes for very manageable reading. It certainly is more manageable than the Secret Wars 2 Omnibus. I collect Marvel Omnibuses and I do like having all the goods in one book. However, these books leap out at you and beg to be read!! if you read the contents of the set you know there is more story and art than the 2 Secret Wars Omnibuses which I appreciated.
Perhaps the most compelling point of this set is it's overall 'WOW' factor! The books look great and the beautiful huge slipcase really jumps out at you and says quality collectable!!
The Marvel Civil War set is due in a month or 2 and really is the way to collect that story. Those books have been in hardcover but Marvel fans have found it difficult to find all the books and when they do, the price for key books has been through the roof. The Civil War boxed set collection is going to be the definitive set for sure.
After that, the new 'Recent' Secret Wars Boxed set will be published and that set will have been only published as TPBs.
As for are these sets worth the money, I say YES. The original Secret Wars and Secret Wars 2 Omnibuses cost about $200.00 to $230.00 for both now...sometimes more. I bought my Secret Wars slipcased boxed set on Amazon for $208.17. 4 days later it was $275.00 on Amazon and I have no clue how they figure out what to charge but I bought my set for 60% off the $500.00 retail. I truly feel for the whole package it was well worth it. Quite honestly, this is a fun set to own and enjoy.
As another reviewer has said, this set comprises the Secret Wars collection from the 1980's and 90's. It does NOT contain ANY of the recent Secret Wars Battlefield books from 2015 or 2016.
This epic story came out the year after I graduated from high school and was busy moving, starting a new job, and eventually joining the army.
I had no inkling of Secret Wars until I finally bought a few books after I'd been in the army for a couple of years and Secret Wars II was well under way.
I resolved that one day I would read The Secret Wars saga in its fullness. That day has finally arrived.
Of course I haven't read all 3500 pages as yet but I have unpacked the contents and have started on the first volume. It is a magnificent thing.
I cannot describe the joy I felt as I filmed myself going through the contents of the exceptional heavy box. But you can find it on YouTube if you search.
I've only read the first 28 pages thus far and they were wonderful. As soon as I publish this, I will continue with the first full story of volume 1.
If you love Marvel this is a collection of epic proportions and a great way to spend a year of your life.
BTW, Amazon ship this in a box inside another box and its almost impossible to arrive with any kind of damage. For $200 cant get any better.
The content is well edited even for someone who does not know much about the Marvel universe. The shipping of the box secures that there will not be even the smallest scratch on your box.
