A Damn Good Game, But So Damn Expensive!

This is a FIVE STAR game. It is almost flawless and even contains eight additional characters. The reason I give it four stars is because of the outlandish price. I paid over $70 for this game. While, again, it's a five star game, I think it shouldn't be so expensive to buy (especially used, as I had to since buying new meant over $200 or so). The game came out over eight years ago and, awesome or not, should be so expensive.

As for the game itself it was quite amazing, a marked improvement in many ways from the X-Men Legends games that the gameplay style is base from. The cutscenes were flawlessly done and the special dialogue, gameplay, and story was quite excellent.

The main flaws for me was that there were only five playable female characters when they had an ENTIRE comic book universe to choose from (obvious additions would have been Black Widow and Gamora, though back then Marvel couldn't know how popular they would become in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Black Cat, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch if they improved her abilities from X-Men Legends II, and maybe one or two more female X-Men members). Also some continuity issues bugged me (such as Spider-Woman not having super strength) but that's just me being nitpicky.

Being able to play your favorite Marvel characters and use trademark special moves has lots to geek out about. A pretty long story line can keep the game interesting for a good while too. Playing with your friends over Xbox live gives relief from AI frustrations and the solo missions in the simulator let each hero show case their stuff. My largest complaint is camera view that corrals the team around like a bunch of sheep. It's hard to make out exactly what's going on at times from clutter and to truly appreciate what the characters are doing. Still, an endurable annoyance given the fun with cheesy dialog and villain chest pounding.

We had the regular edition and the publisher stopped providing the additional content for download by the time we bought it so we were unable to play with the Hero and Villain Packs. The family has really enjoyed playing this game a lot over the years but we were always pretty bummed about not having the additional content. I was really excited to find this Gold Edition for a reasonable price for once.

The game itself is a really great story for an older game and the play style is very challenging at times when working as a team. I definitely recommend it as a good action game that a gaming family can play together and have a lot of fun together for hours. As for the purchase and shipping, the game was delivered a day ahead of time and it was in perfect condition. We are very pleased overall.

Great for kids, but as an adult, I prefer the more "open-world" type games like Web of Shadows and Force Unleashed. This game was released 2 years prior to those, but I found the gameplay "crowded" trying to manage a team of 4 superheros onboard a ficitonal "helicarrier." I prefer a focus on one character and better character development in a game. Also, upgrades menu is somewhat difficult to figure out. Why??? Game creators could've done a lot better with that. I haven't finished the game yet, but after a few levels, it's moderately fun and entertaining. My kids love the fact that they can be any marvel hero or villian they want. Doctor Doom, Magneto, Hulk, Iron Man, you name it!

Sometimes the perspective makes it hard to see what was going on. It can also be difficult to keep track of where your character is when you have more than one player playing. The game provides hints and direction along with way, but not too much to make the game too easy. Overall a very enjoyable game.
