Simple but fun game. Get Gold or Platinum for missing DLC content!

Pretty cool game, very similar to a lot of other games that have come before, like X-Men Legends and the 2000's era TMNT games, and going back to the old Gauntlet Legends console ports. The graphics are pretty smooth and nice looking, despite the small characters. You mash buttons and grab coins, beating up weaker enemies until you get to the boss. There's a lot of maze wandering and button mashing, and the game is simple enough anyone can pick up.

The downside of this game is that if you accidentally "sell" an item you found in game, it's gone for good. Also, since Marvel stopped supporting many of their games, the "DLC" features are inaccessible if you haven't bought them already. So the only way to access this content is either to buy the "Gold Edition" or "Platinum Hits" edition that are available elsewhere online for often very inflated prices. If you don't care about those 8 extra characters and bonus costumes, you'll be fine with this though.

Update: I now own the "Platinum Hits" edition. If you look carefully at the platinum version, you'll notice on the cover it says the "Special Edition." There are other versions out there, but the only real difference between Platinum and the others is that it comes with a "bonus DVD" (though many used copies don't include this extra DVD, as mine didn't). Buying it with the extra DVD (which I'm told is just behind the scenes "Making of the game" material) it tends to cost twice as much. The point is that now you don't have to download anything, with all of the playable characters available at the start (well, after you play the first short intro mission, anyway).

In searching for a game that I could play WITH my 2 kids instead of AGAINST them, this is one of the only offerings, perhaps the highest quality game with 4-player offline co-op gameplay available for the 360. Fortunately its a lot of fun! You get to play as variety of Marvel (and DC) characters like the fantastic 4, x-men, and Avengers, as well as many that I had never heard of (like Moon Knight). forming teams with certain combinations of characters gives you different advantages, and you can level up your favorites and customize them. There's a great deal of content, with the "battle simulator" allowing you to play through scenarios from Stark Tower at will.

I recommend it if you're looking specifically for 4-player offline coop.

Beware of Console Pack-in Versions

This game is excellent!

But this review is about the packaging and sales tactics of some retailers. Be aware that many retailers are not selling this title in its original retail packaging. I ordered it from Video Closeout and I was shipped a console pack-in copy. That means it was a single Xbox 360 box containing 2 discs, one for Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and another for Forza Motorsport 2. They give each game one whole side of the box and cram all the legal info over the the top of the box art. It's not a huge issue, but if you're one who is hoping to have a nice collection on your shelf, this one will look a bit odd. But it is nice to have a bonus game at no additional cost.

Great multi-player game

There isn't a lot of same console multi-player games out there and this is one of them. It allows us (a family of four) to play together in a co-op mode from the same console. We've been looking for something to play as a family and there isn't much out there. We had previously played several of from the Gauntlet series on the PS2 and this is a definite step up on the fun scale.
