Editorial Reviews

It's common knowledge that calypso music flowered in Trinidad around 1920 and remained popular for decades in the region, while also spreading to West Indian immigrant enclaves in England and the United States. Less well-known are the calypso scenes that thrived in Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigeria in the 1950s and '60s. This delightful disc chronicles some of the highlights of that time and place, and though the sound quality is (as one might expect) pretty inconsistent, the music itself is consistently excellent. Highlights include Nigerian trumpeter Roy Chicago's brilliant big-band sound on "Olubunmi," the wonderfully jumping "Fire Fire Fire" by Ebenezer Calender & His Maringer Band, and the classically wry and satirical "Tree and the Monkey" by E.T. Mensah & His Tempos Band. "Dick Tiger's Victory" is a wonderful song unfortunately marred by a seriously out of tune guitar; Bobby Benson & His Jam Session Orchestra's "Calypso Minor One" is an OK instrumental feature that is, unfortunately, marred by seriously subpar sound quality. But by the time Calender's band returns to end the program with the lovely "Arria Baby," you'll be ready to start all over again, if you aren't too tired from dancing. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

I collect calypso ex intepreted by non T&T performers. There is one cut on this album that I heard many years ago and had been looking for it for a long time. The album is reminiscent of what I call 'ole time calypsoes'.

Great stuff; both musical and rhythmic. Fine sound quality, too.
