Amazing movie, nicely done Blu-ray set

This is a great movie. Humor throughout, stunning visuals, an excellent cast and amazing director, and an interesting, if slightly contrived, story add up to a brilliant movie and a perfect new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I purchased the 4-disc combo, so this review is for that version.

3D
This is by far the best done 3D graphics I've seen on a Blu-ray movie so far. Even the menus have incredible depth. Unfortunately, the price seems to have gone up in line with other 3D movies; on release it was down around $18 on Amazon, miraculously.

Packaging
The typical Blu-ray case comes wrapped in a cardboard sleeve with a thick, holographic cover image of the Avengers, plus Nick Fury, looking intimidating on the streets of New York as you can see in the product image. The hologram is pretty nice; it shows a good bit of depth but has very limited range before it repeats. It's pretty much the same image inside the sleeve minus the hologram. Inside, the typical ad leaflets sit on the left along with your code to unlock a digital copy (haven't redeemed it yet, but it says it works with iTunes and Windows Media Player, so it doesn't seem to be Ultraviolet which is nice), a digital music album (see below for tracks), a free digital comic book *offer* (have to be registered at Marvel.com), and a free* movie poster ($3.59 shipping and processing). Another comment mentions having difficulty with the digital copy and downloading the tracks in different regions, so be careful with that if you're interested in those. Rather than have a plastic middle insert with two discs attached to it, both sides of the case have extra deep CD slots that hold two discs each. If you press down on the center plastic mechanism hard enough, the discs come out easily without the death grip some cases seem to have on discs.

Discs
The four discs consist of one Blu-ray 3D copy, one Blu-ray copy, one DVD copy, and one standard definition digital copy. The DVD and Blu-ray discs have several skippable previews before you get to the main menu; I don't think the Blu-ray 3D copy had previews.

Special features
You can find lists of special features in several places, so I won't list them all. The special features vary by disc. The Blu-ray 3D disc has no special features, the DVD only has commentary by Joss Whedon and Assembling the Ultimate Team special features, and the normal Blu-ray disc has all of them. The deleted and extended scenes are interesting if you enjoy those, but my two personal favorite special features were the gag real and the "Marvel One-Shot: Item 47" digital short. The gag real was funny, though certainly not the best I've seen. A couple scenes near the end of the real are pretty hilarious, though. The Marvel One-Shot is a short film (11:20) about a couple finding one of the pieces of alien technology used by the Chitauri and getting it to work. It was a humorous extra piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Lizzy Caplan (Party Down, True Blood, Cloverfield, New Girl) and Jesse Bradford (Hackers, Swimfan, Guys With Kids) with Maximiliano Hernández and Titus Welliver.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this to anyone, especially those looking for a quality 3D movie to show off a 3D TV. Since this was $18ish at release, I was really hoping this would be the one to stop the annoying $30+ 3D Blu-ray trend; alas, it's not. If you're looking for one 3D movie to actually spend the $30 on, though, this one would be an excellent choice.

Marvel's The Avengers (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) is a really excellent movie for the whole family to watch on TV. It has a whole lot of adventure and action. I would recommend this item to anyone who needs it.

Bought as a gift - looks fantastic

This isn't a review of the content of the movie, so if you're looking for that you should head elsewhere.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my dad and he is extremely satisfied. The movie looks absolutely amazing on his TV, a 55-inch, 120Hz Sony Bravia.

I myself enjoyed the movie when I saw it in the theater, and I think it looks better on Blu-ray. It's the first movie I've watched on that screen of his that actually made me say "wow," it looks so good.

It's a pretty no-frills package, so it really comes down to whether or not you enjoy the movie. If you did, I highly recommend this for home theater watching. It will knock your socks off.

One of the best superhero movies ever made

I'd rank this movie up there with The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2 as the most "true to comics feeling" that you'll ever see on the big screen. As a kid growing up I loved the Avengers, and the way this movie played out is exactly as I envisioned them fighting it out as I read the comics as a kid. It was like watching your childhood fantasies realized, in comic book form.

This movie could have been a mess. Meshing 6-7+ different characters together is a huge challenge but Joss Whedon pulls it off. Using Nick Fury and SHIELD as the glue, they gather up all the heroes to stop a crisis without ever crossing that campy or uncomfortable line. The actors and writers did their part by adding some strong back-and-forth repartee between them that will cause some laughs as well as some "I can't believe he said that" moments. The action scenes are top notch, most of them true to the comics and the final flurry of an action scene that ends the movie will leave you in awe, wishing for more.

The negatives about this film are few but there are some. The film slows down significantly in the middle, with a lot of dialogue and not a whole lot else going on...maybe they were just building up to the last scene but at times it felt like the movie kind of dragged on a bit before it got good again. Also the main villain seems to be Loki but he actually takes a rather large back seat to the invading aliens, which kind of take over the movie at the end. It was disappointing to not see Loki really put up a fight, especially towards the end....I know he is the trickster god and manipulation is his game (and there are elements of that), but it would have been nice to see him do a bit more here than just take a break for large parts of the movie.

Still, despite those things, this was a movie that once I saw it at the theaters, I knew I had to own it on DVD. I can only hope the second one is better, as the build-up has already begun (Iron Man 3 is out at the time of this posting), and the proposed villain revealed at the end of this movie left a lot of us drooling for more.

Great Action and an Amazing Team Up

It has been a long time coming but this team up is finally here. Captian America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, The Black Widow, and Shield team up to take on Loki and some almost unstoppable alien forces. Special FX are Amazing!!! The actors portaied that Heroes and Villans like they really were these Heroes and Villians very believable as the characters. With Two Great Ending Spoilers. Leaves you over excited knowing that the sequil is already in the talks and in in the works can't hardly wait for 2014. Bring on any and every vilian out there and The Avengers with show them who is boss and put them in their place. AAA+++
