One big highlight is that you’re playing as a much more experienced Spider-Man, but still has relatable moments. Peter is struggling with rent, his job, relationships, etc. These are things most of us can relate to, which has been the heart and soul of Spider-Man’s appeal for decades; and this game nails that.
Of course, a good take on Peter Parker needs a good take on your friendly neighborhood himself; and that’s also been nailed! For starters, the web swinging has been perfected! A very exciting tune plays in the background when you start building momentum and actually stops when you do. The controller will actually vibrate when you’re going fast, simulating wind. Timing your jumps at the end of each swing builds speed. This one gameplay element had so much effort put into it, that I can just swing around purely for fun and never get sick of it.
The combat system is well made too; it’s basic but has a nice learning curve, I noticed a better difference in my fighting style the further I played. The enemy variation is fine but could’ve used a little more than just, “the easy ones, the big ones, the flying ones, and the really cheap ones”. Bosses are mostly lacking, with some exceptions. The strategy to almost every boss is, “keep dodging until the enemy is vulnerable to attack, rinse and repeat”. Like I said though, there are exceptions, but they’re in the minority.
There’s some really tacked on stealth missions, not as Spider-Man (those stealth portions are great) but as Mary Jane and sometimes Miles Morales. I will say, MJ and Miles are well written characters in this game, but actually playing as them were easily my least favorite parts. You have to sneak past enemies (with no way to neutralize them, except for two missions) and if you slip up; its instant ‘game over’. That is bad stealth design, especially how there’s a far better one when playing the Web-Head! I know there’s only several of these, but they really felt like road blocks to an otherwise well paced game. While I appreciate the idea of Spidey’s allies being more than just NPC’s; I think they could’ve been utilized in a better way, especially if you know the kind of character Miles Morales eventually becomes.
The story is really good, I wont spoil anything but I almost always bolted to the next main mission just so I can find out what happens next. Once again, I will not spoil the ending but man… I was slowly shaking my head in disbelief (in a good way).
The open-world is beautiful and fun to swing around in… but most missions consist of very dated elements. The tedious towers that add more dots to your map, the “do these unremarkable things for me”, the enemy bases, collectables, etc. Some of these missions are actually okay, the enemy bases (while repetitive) makes up for it with the well made combat system. Collectables have fun easter eggs attached to each one you find and it’s cool seeing nods to other Marvel characters. It's by no means one of the worst open-world mission structures but with games like Wicther III and Zelda: Breath of the Wild; I think this game could’ve made it more modern and less like one made by Ubisoft.
With the criticisms I’ve mentioned above, you’d think I find this game only okay… not a chance. The one thing that makes up for almost every gripe I’ve mentioned above is the main character himself. In my opinion, if the protagonist is really well made; it can make up for a myriad of lacking features around it. Spider-Man should be the best part of this game and he certainly is!
All in all, this is definitely the best Spider-Man game to date and has potential to be greater. Judging by how many copies this game has already sold, I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a sequel. Insomiac’s take on the Wall-Crawler is off to an amazing start and I cannot wait to see where it goes next, not just for Spider-Man, but for Marvel in general. I say its worth buying at full price.
