[1] I’ve never been a fan of DLC in general, and this game epitomizes one of the reasons why. Ok, after finishing my playthrough, it’s pretty clear what Insomniac did here. They subtracted three main missions from an already short campaign (more on that later) to earn an extra dollar. If we were in the PS3 era, those three DLCs would have been included as part of the main game. These various companies need to look at how my beloved Capcom handles DLCs. For Monster Hunter: World, Capcom is constantly releasing new monsters -- for free! See how that works, Insomniac? Capcom is not taking away content from the main game, then re-adding it for a lovely fee of $24.99 (City that never sleeps DLC). Sadly, people will continue to pay for stuff that should have been included in the first place, so why would developers stop doing it? I know I sure in the hell wouldn’t stop if I were them…
[2] Hmm, I’m sort of surprised that I’m the only one that has really pointed out this next gripe. I’ve played more than 70 games on the PS4, and do you want to know what they all have in common? They all tell me how much time I've spent playing the game. I was taken aback when I couldn’t find how long I played Spider-man. I thought I must have overlooked something, so I googled it. Nope, I didn't overlook anything, it’s just not included in the game. One of the Spider-man fanboys put forth a theory as to why that simple feature was not included. He believes Insomniac wanted the gamer to get lost in the immersion and not worry about how long they’ve been playing. Sure, that’s the reason why. Nothing more immersive than chasing pigeons around a lifeless city. Oops, I’m getting ahead of myself. I have my own thoughts, but I’d like to believe that anyone reading my review is intelligent enough to figure out why Insomniac wouldn’t want you to know how long it took you to beat their little game. Come on guys/gals, use critical thinking here. I’ll tell you what I think in a later paragraph ;)
[3] I sometimes hate that the Batman franchise ever existed. Why, you ask? Ever since the Batman combat system made its debut, Devs can’t seem to stop copying from it. In all fairness, Spider-man added some neat stuff, but at its core, it’s still “Batman”. There are different skills that you’ll unlock along the way but they’re mostly useless (I’m far from being the only person to say that). For example; one of the skills allows Spider-man to perform tricks in the air… That helped me TREMENDOUSLY in combat! (sarcasm). For me, the best part of the combat was when I commanded my Spider-drones to start shooting people, or whatever the hell it is that they do.
[4] I want to use this moment to apologize to the God of War Devs and fans around the world for calling the boss battles dreadful. Insomniac must have read my review and said “Wait, hold my beer”. Alright, the enemies themselves are your standard type of thugs for the most part, and I’m good with that because they allow you to exercise your combat, and that’s a good thing. But the boss battles; ohhhhh the boss battles. At least God of War had the Valkyrie boss battles and those were exceptional my friends. I can’t name one good boss battle in the entire game, and that includes sidemissions as well. They were a “button prompt” mess that took very little imagination to win. Remember the Kraven boss battle in The Amazing Spider-man 2? Damn I miss that game (never thought I would say that). Here’s how the typical boss battle goes: Lay on R1 to shoot webs at them. If that doesn’t work, find something to fling at them and keep doing that until they get tired. When the boss gets tired, press triangle to quickly navigate towards them, and get a few melee attacks in until he knocks you off. Keep repeating that process. Does that sound like a good boss fight for a Triple A game?
[5] Remember I briefly mentioned not being able to tell how long I’ve been playing the game? Well, let’s dive into that. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you this is the most pitiful “campaign” I’ve ever seen. With all the bloated side content, I surmise the campaign was maybe 5 hours long -- and that’s pushing it. Here’s why I believe they don’t want you to know how long you've been playing: Many gamers skip side content and play ONLY the campaign. How would it look if people were reporting a 5 hour campaign for a $60.00 game? Here’s an example of one of the campaign missions, and if you’ve played the game, I dare you to go in the comment section and tell me I’m making this up. There was a mission for Peter to go to a place called F.E.A.S.T. and talk to Aunt May. Yup, that was the actual mission and not the only one of its kind. Man, I really wish there were like 3 more main missions that could have been included in the main game to beef up the campaign. Any idea where I could find such missions?
[6] I can’t stand it when games force you to play them in a certain fashion, and that’s exactly what happened with those damn MJ and Miles stealth missions. I would be ok with one or two of those things, but I felt like they were every other mission in an already short campaign. Why on earth would Miles and MJ be a focal point in a Spider-man game that’s supposed to be action-packed? The gist of these silly missions is to sneak from point A to point B without being detected. I was often happy when I got detected because it insured a sudden (and well deserved) death for the character;). It got to the point where I dreaded moving forward with the game because I was fearful of when yet ANOTHER stealth mission would be forced on me. When I look back on this game, I’ll think of MJ and Miles; and not Spider-man.
[7] I feel like 20% of the game is the campaign (and that’s being generous) while the remaining 80% is side content -- bloated side content --bad, bloated side content. I’m not going to go into too much detail because talking about how bad the content is only going to make me angry. You have the Black Cat stuff (finding her little toy cat and taking a pic of it), taking pics of various landmarks, chasing down pigeons, taking down thugs, taking down stronger thugs, taking down even stronger thugs, (get the point?), looking for backpacks, several annoying Task Master missions, and the various Research Stations in which is a whole ‘nother can of worms. I probably missed something, but who cares :)
[8] If you’re a trophy hunter who cares about Platinums, you’ll be able to get it, if you can endure the bore-fest along the way. I fell one trophy short because I didn’t properly manage some of my tokens and I’ll be damned if I go through some of those Task Master missions again!! I know this has been a negative review, but there are two good things about the game. The Platinum is easy to get, and you’ll meet Silver Sablinova (ohhhh yeah). Well, that’s about it…
I usually never do this, but I simply cannot recommend this game to a non Spider-man fan. If you love him, you’ve more than likely already made up your mind that this is an excellent game, so go for it. For everyone else, I’d suggest taking a hard pass on this one because it’s all the things that people “claim” to hate about open world games, but for some reason, they overlook those things when it comes to this game. Mega Man 11; you’re up next!!!
--Story:
Peter Parker has been Spider-man for 8 years already, so no origin story with the radioactive spider or Uncle Ben's death (although mentioned briefly in the story).
There's a nice mix of a dual lifestyle in this game as the story balance out Peter Parker's personal life with that of Spider-man; making the character you play more relatable and to switch things up so you don't get constant combat making for good pacing.
Plot (minor spoilers, first few hours): Spider-man finally takes down the Kingpin and put him in jail. As a result, a new villain arises in the form of Mister Negative. Mister Negative or Martin Li also runs F.E.A.S.T. shelters across the city, which Peter's Aunt May works for which complicates things.
Aside from the Mister Negative; you face other villains in Spider-man's rogue gallery like Shocker, Electro, Rhino, Scorpion, Dr. Octopus, Vulture, Taskmaster and more. These characters don't play a huge part in the story compared to Mister Negative (and maybe one more villain), but the boss battles they're in are really fun.
Other villains are mentioned (but not able to face against) through phone conversations, collectables, and JJJ podcasts. Guess they want to save it for potential sequel.
There is DLC announced for the Black Cat as of this review with two more to come after.
--Gamplay:
A mix of Spider-man 2 and Batman Arkham games with it's own identity mixed in.
Web-slinging feel very natural once you get the hang of it, and way better than the Spider-man 2 game as you can more manual control. You have to time your button presses to shoot out webs, calculate airtime, forward thrust and momentum. It controls are very seamless once you get used to it.
Combat is very fast paced. Very similar to the Batman Arkham games with it's attack, dodge (when you get spider sense) mechanic, but more room to maneuver around compared to batman due to Spider-man having more agility, speed and ability to web swing.
-Options for combat are:
Melee Attacks
Web based attacks
Dodge
Web Gadgets: use of elemental webbing and/or web bombs/traps. Some of which are super effective against certain enemies
Swing Around- can be used as hit-and-run tactic if you're not high enough level
Grab nearby objects with web and toss at enemies
Activate focus meter/Activate Suit Powers - heal or do finishing move
There's a lot of combinations you can do, especially as you upgrade abilities. Combat is very fast, responsive and will not overwhelm you with options as these abilities will unlock gradually as you progress. It's also not a button masher as some abilities require you to time button presses or hold buttons for few seconds during combos.
-Upgrade System
There are 2 ways to upgrade Spider-man: leveling up and crafting items.
There are 3 upgrade trees you can select from:
Innovator: tactical skills
Defender: Melee combat based
Web-sling: Jump around/dodge better during combat, also can use in overworld/chase sequence mini-games
-Crafting.
You can upgrade your suit and make gadgets by collecting in-game tokens by doing side objectives
-There are 27 suits to collect. To unlock suits to craft, you have to be a certain level (and have materials) or complete certain objectives. If you 100% all side objectives you get this half naked spider-man suit where he's just in his underwear and a Spider-man mask. Last level unlock suit is at level 50.
If you pre-order the game; the Spiderpunk suit, for example is unlocked from the get-go instead of having to wait till you reach level 16.
There are 3 empty spaces for 3 additional suits. I assume it'll be included in the 3 planned story DLC for the game.
-Other Gameplay
To change up the pace a bit; you also play as Mary Jane, where you have to sneak around enemies to escape certain areas.
There's also QTE (quick time events) during cinematic sequences
Taskmaster acts like the Riddler in the Batman Arkham games giving you various side quests around the map before you face him
Game takes around 15-20 hours to complete depending on your skill and how fast you intend to rush through the main story campaign. To collect everything and get platinum trophy it can take upwards to 40 hours.
--Graphics
Game looks very good, especially on the PS4 Pro where Spider-man's suit and puddles stand out more compared to the regular PS4. Whatever format you play it on, the game looks amazing.
Has very good draw distance, and cinematic cutscenes. If you are nitpicky and walk up to individualized objects, the textures may be off a bit. Seeing the fast paced nature of the game, you most likely not have time to look around the over world anyway. Regardless, one of the best looking PS4 games to date
Voice acting is also very good. Like the banter between Peter and Mary Jane. Also get some fun laughs when you use the Quips (tell jokes to enemies) ability for the Comic Spider-man suit.
Overall, had a blast playing this game. If you're a fan of Spider-man or super hero games in general; it's a must buy.
