When the girl who loves books finds a book of magic – anything can happen!
Mary Bennet lives to learn, so she jumps at the chance to visit her sister Jane and catalog the enormous book collection at the Bingleys’ new estate. And it’s in that collection that Mary discovers the mysterious book – ancient, hand-written, bound in a scaly skin, and written in an unknown language.
But then the book changes, and permits her to read it. It is a magical book, and it’s willing to teach her magic! A whole new world opens up to Mary, a world wondrous and strange. The rational, scientific young woman discovers that this world contains secret magicians, uncanny beings, artifacts of power – and dangers such as she had never imagined. This new world brings Mary new friends. But also powerful and dangerous enemies.
Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex is the first book of the Regency Mage series, and begins Mary’s journey through this magical world. If you enjoy Jane Austen, Harry Potter, and Georgette Heyer, you’ll love Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex because it blends Regency comedy of manners and fantasy high adventure.

About the author

Joyce Harmon has been from one side of the galaxy to the other (slight exaggeration) and seen a lot of strange stuff (very true). Since retiring from the Navy, she has worked as a winery tour guide, a journalist for a local newspaper, selling collectibles on eBay, and making candles - and always, always, a writer. She shares her rural Virginia home with two haughty and indolent cats and one clever, busy dog, and is haunted by a noisy crowd of characters, all clamoring to be written down and set loose into the world. She accommodates them as quickly as she can. She is the author of the Passatonnack Winery mysteries, and the Regency Charades series of Regency romances. Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex is the first novel of the Regency Mage series, historic fantasy starring Mary Bennet, the studious and overlooked middle daughter of Pride and Prejudice. Other books in the series include Mary Bennet and the Wickham Artifact, out now, and soon to be released: Mary Bennet and the Beast of Rosings Park, and Mary Bennet and the Shades of Pemberley.
Joyce blogs occasionally at http://joyceharmon.wordpress.com/ , mostly about her dog.

I am in a tearing hurry to buy -- and immediately read -- the rest of the series, so this will be quick. I love a good "drawing-room Regency," and this is definitely one of those. I love a good mystery -- ditto. I love a good fantasy -- that, too. And I love Jane Austen -- and Joyce Harmon does an amazing job of replicating the experience of reading the original.
It is great fun to see the Pride and Prejudice characters from a different vantage point. Mary is revealed as a dedicated autodidact, constrained by the small scope of her daily life and battered into shutting down by her mother's relentless criticism and dismissal. Jane, interestingly, is far more interesting when seen by eyes other than Elizabeth's, without losing any of the qualities that Elizabeth so prizes. Combine Jane, Bingley, and a charming house with a library to die for, and Mary gets a chance to truly bloom. Add in a gift for magic, and it really gets interesting!
Beautifully written, clever, subtle, and just un-put-downable! I am so pleased to have discovered Joyce Harmon and this genuinely wonderful series. And now, off to procure a binge!

After reading the four available books: Buy in confidence -- the sequels are just as good as this first book.
This book presents the characters and time period well, and while not up to Austen’s standard, continues the story of the characters very well.
However, my absolute favorite part of the book was the magic! Mary’s love of books and learning is rewarded when she stumbles upon magic books in Bingley’s library. How exciting! I loved the magic, how it worked, and several details that were imaginative and a bit of fun considering the time period.
I look forward to continuing the series.
If you love magical tales this hook is for you, even if you aren’t a big Austen fanatic. Branching out into completely new storylines and characters is refreshing, and if I had the money, this is the series I would pick to make into films. Please madam, write more in this series, I beg you.
She instantly falls in love with the library, which is much larger than her father's. It's stocked with a wonderful variety of books, including......magic? How odd, she thinks. But it's even odder when she sees a ghost. And then she finds a funny little magical spell book, and when one of the spells actually works - is it possible that magic is ***real***?!?
How Mary learns that not only is magic real, but that she has a definite talent for it, makes for an unusual and charming take on the much-neglected middle Bennet sister. Her logical mind is of real use, helping her to puzzle out several mysteries and find novel solutions.
I enjoyed this as a pleasant read, and will order the next book in the series. Hopefully it will be as good.

As a whole, I loved the book - what a wonderful reimagining of Mary Bennet, and the magical elements were a ton of fun.
Delighted to see there are 4 books in the series - I know what I'll be reading this weekend!
Well written, with lots of loveable and quirky characters, a strong female protagonist, and a brilliant plot.
The only thing wrong with it was that it was way too short!
More please.
