My daughters are three and five and were firstly drawn in by the title. We joked about what that saying means colloquially, and literally. Women and girls take for granted the relative equality we experience today in simple activities such as dressing. I asked them what they can do in pants versus in their most elaborate costumes and they considered many examples.
My girls were excited to recognize figures such as Lincoln. We drew reference to events that Mary Walker and her service affected such as the Underground Railroad and the Suffrage Movement.
This book has been requested many, many nights already!
Dr. Walker was a revolutionary figure, and this books talks about her in such sexist terms.
I am planning to write a chapter book for children on this woman, and this book has been very helpful. I recently completed a manuscript on Dr. Walker with ideas that teachers might use in their classroom.
