I've been cruising the Chesapeake Bay for over 35 years, and find this guide the "best". It's up to date, and compact enough to keep on the boat, and of sufficient scale for safe comfortable navigation over the Northern Chesapeake. Using the companion Virginia Cruising Guide provides coverage of the entire Chesapeake Bay. The Marina listings and the facility information are invaluable, for planning long cruises by local cruisers, transients, charterers, or snow birds traveling the Bay. I use it for cruising on my powerboat, and sailing on the entire Bay. The detailed Tide Current Charts and tables are especially useful for trips where the currents may affect your travel time. While modern GPS tools have their place, this booklet provides user friendly information, with pre-plotted courses, in a larger size overview, and daylight readable format.
A prudent yachtsman should not leave the dock without it !

My father designed the Guide to Cruising Maryland Waters for the Maryland Fisheries Commission. As a mapmaker and a long time boater, he knew exactly what should be included. Later, when our family business took over publication from the state, Dad renamed it the Maryland Cruising Guide, because that's how customers asked for it. Soon after, there was much interest in having the same sort of chart for the Virginia Tidewaters, so the Virginia Cruising Guide 2012-2013 followed soon after.

This is the best choice of Chesapeake Bay chartbook out there because they're the most up-to-date books out there. They're revised and reprinted every two years (since 1961!) using the Notice to Mariners, and the latest data provided by NOAA. The pages have overlap and nothing is lost in the seams. They use a special wet-strength paper that doesn't fall apart when wet and you can write on it with an ordinary pencil or pen. Maryland and Virginia Cruising Guides use red-light readable ink so it's visible under navigation lights at night. They come with a protective vinyl sleeve.

The Maryland Cruising Guide has been used by all the boaters that I grew up with and, as far as I'm concerned, is the best chartbook around. When you look inside this one, it's easy to see why most boaters prefer ours to others.

Before going out on the Chesapeake Bay, I always use my MD or VA Cruising Guide to chart my course. Its so much easier than a smaller GPS.
