Editorial Reviews

Review

Fast paced, tale that is well written, with passion, action, fights, sensual tension, duplicity, treason, and finding a HEA for Beth. A must read for Historical Romance fans who enjoy action, adventure, and yes, treason. Well researched. I would strongly recommend "Mask of Duplicity" to fans of Scottish Historical, The Jacobite Rebellion and uprising, Historical Romance fans, and fans of Scottish-Brittish history. A fascinating story with a long cast of characters who will capture your interest and hold your attention. A true treasure! An enjoyable and satisfying read and one I would strongly recommend. ~ My Book Addiction and More

About the Author

Julia has been a voracious reader since childhood, using books to escape the miseries of a turbulent adolescence. After leaving university with a degree in English Language and Literature, she spent her twenties trying to be a sensible and responsible person, even going so far as to work for the Civil Service. The book escape came in very useful there too.
And then she gave up trying to conform and resolved to spend the rest of her life living as she wanted to, not as others would like her to. She has since had a variety of jobs, including telesales, teaching and gilding and is currently a transcriber, copy editor and proofreader.  In her spare time she is still a voracious reader, and enjoys keeping fit and travelling the world. Life hasn't always been good, but it has rarely been boring. She lives in rural Wales with her cat Constantine, and her wonderful partner sensibly lives four miles away in the next village.
Now she has decided that rather than just escape into other people's books, she would actually quite like to create some of her own, in the hopes that people will enjoy reading them as much as she does writing them.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reading copy of Mask of Duplicity by Julia Brannan. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can honestly say that I really looked forward to picking it up to continue with the story. I found the writing style so pleasant to read - I found it easy on the mind and I didn't have to struggle with it at all unlike some authors. That's not to say that it's written in a simplified manner, just that it suits my reading style. I was a little concerned at the beginning of the book by the large "cast list" but my fears were unfounded as it was not necessary to remember all the characters as they were introduced gradually throughout the book. The story is an interesting one and caught my imagination, which made it into a real page turner. The end of the story is satisfying yet leaves it open for another installment in another book, for which I know I will be purchasing. I've just got to know what will happen next!

Perfectly Titled and as beloved to me as Jane Austen & Alexander Dumas!
I really don't know if Julia Brannan would consider it much of a compliment but I have been a fan of Austen novels for sometime. I can and have and likely will read them again and again because the characters are real enough to slip into, real enough to love, hate, cry, gasp, and laugh over. I'm also a fan of Alexander Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo. Talk about a brick, huh? But, what layers and intrigue, twists, and yarns! The Mask of Duplicity has all that without being overly cumbersome. But, when a book is this good, I only want more anyway. Thank the powers that be and Julia Brannan that installment two, The Mask Revealed is in my hand, er Kindle now!

Spoiler: Unlike Austen and Dumas, Brannan's novel does include descriptive violence and some sex. One scene is graphic enough to raise more than ire when our heroine faces a rather intense situation between her and her volatile half-brother. At one point, I was not sure I could go on. Against my "good" conscience voice saying "stop," I proceeded. I can assure you, if you make it that far, that there is nothing else as bad or worse for the rest of Book One. (This particular scene is approximately one third the way into the novel.) Anyone who has ever experienced a violation against their person to any degree may find it very uncomfortable to read through this scene. It was difficult. But our heroine triumphs, and so can we all.

I love historical fiction and am always looking for a promising new writer to bring me strong, well-developed, and believable characters set against a tapestry of historical figures and events. I want to be able to believe that these fictional characters could have been unknown threads in the fabric of our history, not apparent at first view, but crucial to the weave. Julia Brannan provides that kind of character development.

In Mask of Duplicity, the Jacobite Rising of 1745 entwines itself into the life of Beth Cunningham, a young woman whose life is dramatically changed when her father dies and her estranged half-brother, Richard, returns from serving in the military. Pulled from the English countryside and thrust into London society, Beth unknowingly stumbles into the tangled fibers of sovereignty, loyalty, and rebellion.

Fans of the Outlander series will appreciate the way that Julia Brannan is able to bring these characters alive and make you want to give up sleep to keep reading. When you do close the book to get some sleep, you’ll drift off wondering how the characters are doing and what will happen next. If you’re like me, you’ll buy the second book, The Mask Revealed, within seconds of finishing Mask of Duplicity.

I was so very excited about this book! I loved the cover and read the fabulous reviews.... Then I got about 20% through and there in starts a my issues with this book and was surprised no on else commented on this.
Spoiler Alert!!!!!

The heroines half brother attempts to rape her! It was also described pretty graphically. I couldn't stomach it once I saw the road this was taking so I don't know what happened in the end and deleted it from my kindle.
I normally don't leave reviews but I felt that others may be disturbed by this like me and would want to know before picking up the book.

I love books that weave history and romance, interesting characters with interesting times. For a new author (though you would not guess it), this is an outstanding book. The characters are very true in their opinions, the historical elements are just the right amount of scene setting, the hero and heroine interesting and multi-dimensional. The second book is out and I will be reading it immediately. I do think that this story will be worth more than the two published books. Very well done. One can see on-self living in the time of this book with the conflicts and social structure. Absolutely with reading!

I always love a refreshing historical novel. Romance, character development and a sound plot make for a good read and now I want to read the next book in this series, especially to read how Beth will react to finding out the true identity of her fiancé.
