I love reading the Vanessa Michael Monroe novels, even though her amazing skills (martial and linguistic) defy belief.

Monroe has survived a brutal adolescence that taught her how to use knives and guns with ease. It also gave her a taste for killing. Her bursts of blood lust come in handy in fights with multiple assailants. Against the most impossible odds, she always manages to win. This makes for very exciting reading.

Monroe is a born linguist. She absorbs languages as if by osmosis. Two months in an African village, or an Eastern European city, and she can communicate. She can handle an assignment anywhere in the world like no other operative.

Last but not least, Monroe is a completely convincing cross-dresser. Tall, slender and good-looking, she can be a woman or a man as needed, which comes in handy for an investigator.

In this novel, she's in Japan, visiting her lover, Miles Bradford, a private security expert, and like Monroe, a powerhouse of fighting skills and a paragon of intelligence. But the bad guys set a trap and get the better of Bradford, and so Monroe takes on the job of getting him out of trouble.

Perhaps because I'm fascinated by Japan, this is one of my favorite Monroe novels. She has to navigate through Japanese corporate culture, with its maddening consensus decision-making and subtle subterfuges. Her investigations take her after hours to hostess clubs and expose her to the peculiar Japanese justice system, with its lack of personal rights. She treads on the toes of the Japanese Mafia. Even Monroe's struggles to get enough sleep at night take her to interesting places.

The plot revolves around corporate espionage and futuristic technology. It features a ruthless female super spy who makes a great villain.

Arriving in Osaka, Vanessa Michael Munroe thinks she is finally home. She is back with Bradford, the only man who can tame her savage instincts. From nearly the first page, however, the reader is forewarned that Vanessa will soon be troubled about a choice that Bradford makes.

Bradford has taken an assignment as a security consultant for a Japanese firm that believes trade secrets are being stolen by one of its employees. He is soon accused of murder. Although Michael knows that the accusation is false, she is upset with Bradford for reasons that make her seem uncharacteristically like a drama queen. In any event, getting to the bottom of why Bradford has been framed becomes Michael's mission.

The Mask presents a grim view of Japanese business culture. Its portrayal of the Japanese system of criminal justice is even darker. Whether the perspective is accurate I couldn't say, but it is at the heart of the novel's plot. Had this story been set in the United States I would have found the plot unconvincing, given fairly obvious evidence (revealed early in the novel) that Bradford has been set up. Perhaps exculpatory evidence has less value in Japan. In any event, my unfamiliarity with the culture allowed me to suspend my disbelief, which allowed me to buy into the plot.

The story doesn't have the power or drama of some earlier Michael Munroe novels, but the intricate plot is satisfying, action scenes are fun, and the pace is swift. The Mask adds little to Munroe's character development but it does add a worthy opponent to her growing list of adversaries (described as two tigers meeting by chance in the forest). I would have enjoyed seeing that character developed more fully but perhaps Taylor Stevens has plans for her in a future novel. I would like that, but whatever the plan might be, I look forward to reading the next installment in Munroe's effort to find a balanced life.

First, let me say I'm a big fan of Taylor Stevens' novels and a bigger fan of her cunning, delightfully vicious, knife wielding protagonist Vanessa Michael Munroe. That said, The Mask was not my favorite offering in the series, albeit satisfying. My favorite is still the Innocent, the second in the series.

The Mask takes place in Tokyo, where Michael's love, Bradford has taken an assignment to investigate the theft of corporate secrets from a biotech firm developing human organs by using 3D printing.
After her last assignment off the coast of West Africa, Michael decides to join Bradford for a much needed love-fest. Her uncontrollable lust for action and work drag her into trying to extricate Bradford from a Japanese prison for the murder of a woman who works for the bio-tech firm. Of course, Bradford is innocent, but framed by those trying to conceal the theft of company secrets.

Michael has to use all of her physical and acute mental skills to try and free her lover and find the real killer, as well as the secret thief. For a fans of Michael, there is plenty of her knife play and oodles of her “informationist” skills portrayed in The Mask, like her learning the Japanese language in less than a month. She also spends much of this novel as a man.

All in all, I enjoyed this novel, as it was well written and paced and the dialogue realistic. However, I felt the secondary characters were not as developed and the usual exquisite detail of the landscape was not up to past Munroe editions. It is a fast read and for fans of Michael Munroe certainly worth reading, but if you haven’t read any other novels in the series, I would start with the Informationist.
