This novel is about the inner dragons so many people have and how they can ruin a life when allowed to surface. In this case it is the death of Jacob's father. To say more may become a spoiler and I hope you buy this book to support this author who is one of my "must read" writers.
In this book the author writes in British English complete with a lot of slang. Fortunately the kindle look-up feature was able to enlighten me. The Brits have some interesting expressions that are enjoyable to read.
As I was reading the book, I wondered about the ending. I think Michael did a good job of slowly working up to it and then springing it. Good characters, psychological experiences, and a non-stop story line kept me engaged throughout.
Remember Indie authors need our support so buy this book and leave a review on Amazon and Goodreads.
Unfortunately, I gave the book 3 stars because I found a lot of the book's middle to be fluff. The novel starts off well and ends explosively, but everything in between feels like a constant tug of war where the main character, Jacob, is constantly going back and forth with no growth or substantial change.
(Spoiler warning from here on out)
Some parts that aren't as interesting are drawn out, while other parts (such as Jacob telling Mia about the masked creature) are completely glossed over. The pacing could have been tightened, and more focus on the creature would have helped emphasis the 'horror' part of the novel. I feel like the novel would have been stronger if Jacob had moved into his father's house sooner, and spent more alone time with the creature. But that's just me.
A minor thing, but I felt the twist ending wasn't hinted at enough to make it seem logical. There are some references to Jacob's amnesia and missing years, and I knew there was going to be some twist revolving around that amnesia, but there wasn't enough of build up to incriminate his father. At least not to me, anyway. Maybe the few references and the initial scene with his dad were enough.
(Spoiler warning ends here)
All in all, the book is worth picking up and reading, but could have used better pacing.
