It's great to see some complete Palestrina masses and motets after reading so many tiny snippets in the Jeppesen book. However, I could not find many direct quotes by Jeppesen from these masses and motets. I found the following.
* Missa L'Homme Armé, Credo, bars 12-13, page 161, are quoted by Jeppesen on page 194.
* Missa Papae Marcelli, Credo, bars 186-189, page 207, are quoted by Jeppesen on page 160.
* Missa Papae Marcelli, Benedictus, bar 11, page 212, is quoted by Jeppesen on page 153.
That's not really a lot, of course, but it is interesting to see how the quotes differ from these scores. Jeppesen uses the original C-clefs (which are difficult for modern people to read), whereas this Dover Palestrina book uses octavo G-clefs instead. Some people might find it odd that the Altus voices are in octavo G-clefs instead of untransposed G-clefs, but these are not alto voices, and the voice ranges fit very well indeed into the octavo G-clefs. The time-values are halved (replacing half-notes with quarter-notes etc.), which is probably a good idea for us modern people.
These masses and motets are printed in spacious open score, nicely typeset throughout, although the printing is sometimes a bit thin, suggesting that the plates are getting a little weary.Read more ›
