Expanded and updated is this fine guide to the basics of English which is aimed primarily at ESL students, but which may serve as a strong refresher course for many an ad ult. The basics of English grammar and guidelines for basic usage are outlined, along with plenty of examples which illustrate clearly both the right and wrong way to use language. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

All verb tenses are spelled out in detail with special attention to the formulation of questions and answers. This book is excellent for the mid-level and advanced English student. It starts with a self-examination so the students can see where they need more work.
Virtually all your questions, topics & quirks of the English language are explained clearly and concisely with many examples. The index allows you to find your topic quickly and get your answers. It is the best reference I've found after years of teaching ESL.
Most students have trouble with English prepositions and prepositional phrases (at, in, on, over, under, through..etc). This book has many pages with explanations and examples so students can quickly understand.
This isn't a book for the beginners. There are no cute pictures, stories, or anecdotes. It is a serious book which helps serious students with the areas that they need assistance.
Contrary to one of the previous reviews I have no problem with the explanations of how perfect verbs are formed. It all makes sense.
Warning the prospective buyers: this book does not have exercises at the end of each chapter. It is not a grammar workbook. But what it does have is a pretest and a final test, so you can evaluate your progress.
Thank you, Jean Yates!
