I loved Maksim and Cat. The sexual chemistry between them was off the charts from the very beginning and as their story progressed we see that the chemistry extends much farther than the physical and sexual, although that is always something that burns hot between them, and it just shows that they are meant to be together. Separately, I have to say I think I love Maks just a tiny bit more than Aleks, they are both so similar in their “I am the Alpha, you will do as I say” personalities, and both had a lot of darkness in them, but there was something about Maks and his vulnerability that when it came out just had me melting for him, even though I did want to smack him a few times. But then there is Cat and that hot mami stole the show. It takes a lot for me to crush harder on the h of the H/h but Cat did it. She’s vivacious, intelligent, strong, funny, sassy and she owns herself. She doesn’t back down from what she wants, even when Maks was doing his very sexy Alpha dominant thing, Cat owned her sexuality and herself and was very much apart of all that was going on and I loved being in her head and experiencing her risk/reward debates.
While much of the book is focused on Maks and Cat’s relationship, there is the little matter of Cat and her past. I thought it was played out well and didn’t mind that while it was in the forefront of Cat’s mind, it took something of a back seat in the big scheme of things.
We also get to catch up with Aleks and Natalie and be at their wedding and it was wonderful to not only see where they are at but to get to have a little interaction with Aleks and Maks and see how their relationship is progressing. And of course there is Jess. LOVE her. I do hope she gets her own book because she’s just amazing...maybe her and Dmitri? The again maybe not because they may go totally nuclear on each other, especially afterlearning just a little more about what happened to Maks and Dmitri, but if anyone can pull it off it would be KC.
***Semi Spoiler Alert***
Things I liked:
Smart Female lead
Great sex scenes
Bringing in characters from previous books ( I love Jess)
Things I felt mixed about
one particular sex scene where I am still not sure how much the protagonist consented
the kidnapping plot ( especially given Ana-Lucia's past)
the morning after "shot" I'm a doctor- this killed me
the morning after non consented speculum exam- this is rape no matter how you slice it
Things I did not like
The characters did not get to know each other until the end (makes their lasting potential questionable)
The huge age difference between the characters ( though that made her decision-making skills beleivable)
Overall I liked the characters ( the Siberian is still my fave however) and felt they had excellent chemistry and continued to surprise eachother and grow toward eachother. Good sequel and line up for the third story! ( please let the heroine be Jess!!!)
Okay, so to just get through my complaints, I had two major issues. One was actually the ridiculous amounts of sex (I feel uptight just admitting that), and the other was Maksimilian. To clarify my first point, I have to say first that this book was scorching. I mean, like HOT. I thought my poor Kindle would catch aflame from the amount of chemistry and passion in this book. BUT, there was so much of it, I almost felt smothered. Maybe if I wasn't the type of person to read a book cover to cover in one sitting it wouldn't have bothered me as much, but I almost felt uncomfortable by the amount of sex they were having. It was never-ending, and for me, that made it difficult to appreciate each moment they had together. It was like eating your favorite treat for every meal, so then by dessert you still liked it but you also wanted something else or at least a reprieve.
As for my second point, Maksimilian, it's not that I didn't like him, I just felt like I didn't get to know him as must as Aleks. The wonderful Cat had such a huge personality and significant backstory, she kind of took over the show. It's not that I didn't love getting to know her or discover her past, but Maksimilian's life got shoved aside in the process. I felt like you didn't get to hear about his terrible, realistic, explained-everything kind of story until the end, and when it finally came out it was like...eh. Cat kind of gives him a pat on the back and then it's back to her issues.
Other than those little problems I had with this book, I really did love it. Cole is so talented with how real she makes her characters and their lives. I EAGERLY await the next book in this series...or any series of hers really. But specially, I can't wait to be introduced to the youngest brother of the Sevastyan family. I can't even imagine what kind of lovely lady Cole will have rock his world.
