What detracted from this story was that for the first third of the novel the characters never meet. When they do finally spy each other, Madeline runs away from her destiny with Ian. Of course, they find each other later when Madeline is stealing silver votives from shrines. These have been left by the evil nobleman who has overtaken Madeline's castle and thrown her father into prison. She is almost burned at the stake but is saved by Ian.
The two stay together after this albeit Madeline would prefer they parted company even though she knows this man is in her future. She reads minds but not that accurately it seems as she believes Ian is in love with someone else.
When the two are together, there is much more introspection than dialogue and unfortunately this happens during their conversations. There will be several paragraphs that go by before a lead will respond to the question or comment posed by the other because they are thinking about what the other said or they get caught up thinking about their past or future etc. I had to go back several paragraphs to refresh my memory as to the original question.
One nice thing about this novel is there is a real romance between this couple. Once they commit to each other they are totally committed. They never doubt their destiny and their trust in each other is unbreakable.
