I will take issue with a couple of statements. Location 410: "Were you aware that an on camera flash has an effective range of about 10 feet? Anything more than that and the light is completely useless! It isn't helping at all!" This information is completely erroneous. Page 131 of the Canon 60D manual shows the maximum shooting distance at ISO 400 @ F/4 is 21 feet, and 15 feet at F/5.6. If using an on camera flash as illustrated on the page, the Canon 580 EX gives you a shooting distance of over 60 feet! So this information simply is not correct...unless you are shooting with a Kodak Instamatic and a flash cube.
Secondly, at location 419, the author writes: "Any wedding photographer who says he or she hasn't missed a lot of great shots (sometimes even essential shots) while they were waiting for the flash to recharge is lying." I photographed weddings for over 35 years. I was the 1983 Art Leather/Brides Magazine Wedding Photographer of the Year, and I can say...without lying...that I never missed a shot waiting for my strobe to recycle. I always used Quantum external battery packs, and recycling was nearly instantaneous. If you are going to do weddings (or ANY type of photography professionally) you should use professional equipment. Going to a wedding with AA batteries for your flash unit is NOT professional.
I'd suggest the author do a rewrite and maybe jettison a lot of the reference to film. While film users ARE out there, the numbers are dwindling.
I like to take photos but don't always understand why some are so bad. I signed up to get daily emails and as things are talked about I really do go try them for myself.
Love learning and teaching others about things I have learned.
Examples of what is being discussed are shown to really help you understand what it going on in your camera.
The author is so down to earth and I don't feel like he's talking straight tech terms, they are easy for me to understand.
Many other sources of further reading are highlighted during the book so you can refresh your memory.
A lot of technical settings but if you go slow and do what you're told you can make the right settings on your camera. Lots of other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
For the beginner, who just received their first DSLR camera and who wants to really learn how to have fantastic shots using the settings, not just the green auto box, these books are perfect. Dan starts at a basic level and walks through the theory and the how to so you know not only what you are doing, but why you are doing it.
A key to taking good steady shots is a stable foundation (how you place your feet). These books give the photographer a steady foundation of knowledge and know how on which to build beautiful photography.
then explains in simple language photo lighting and how to do it like a pro. I learned things here
that I have not read in other photo how to books. It is also well illustrated with pics and diagrams
both to illustrate positive as well as negative results. Highly recommended if you are or want
to become serious about photography.
