Ya'aqooba's activities in Arab countries were not known to the public, but senior officers in the security system today state that his contribution to the State of Israel was of great importance.
In this spellbinding novel, Bertha Naim tries to depict the way of life of a senior agent. Based on what little is known of Ya'aqooba's actions, combined with her rich imagination and her talent for description, Bertha pours light into the secret, fascinating world of the people in the security community.
"... One could say, without exaggeration, that the immigration of the Jews from Syria in the 1950s to Israel was possible, in large part, due to Ya'aqooba. His contribution to this operation is immeasurable. His contribution to society, to his family and to the country is worthy of praise, and he deserves to be recorded in the history of Israel as one of the important personalities in the history of our nation."
General (res.) Meir Amit

And it is not just the author; the story has been entirely developed with engaging and realistic conversations, impeccable grammar, not forgetting the impressively continuous flow of the story. The author has shown her masterly skills by correctly developing the characters and having complete control of her story and style. I highly recommend this masterpiece to all lovers of thrillers and any other person who hasn't tried them yet.
“Master spy” narrates some exciting chapters of the Israeli agent’s youth. It begins with the anecdote of his recruitment, and then we travel to his childhood in Jerusalem and move chronologically through other fascinating episodes.
I’m not usually drawn to espionage stories but I gave this one a try. I do not regret it, the narration was engaging at all times, the story’s flow was very smooth and it keeps you hooked. Before reading the book I was not aware about Ya’aqooba’s story but I’m definitely intrigued now (sadly there is not much information on the internet about him).
I definitely recommend reading it. Especially if you are into espionage and adventure stories.
The author, Bertha Naim, did an excellent job of opening the door into the life of the man in the shadows. Her writing is clear, and easy to understand. The chapter, “About Ya’aqooba”, was a little hard to get through, because of the translation, but trust me it really smooths out and is a great read.
Bertha did a really great job utilizing footnotes throughout the story. And I really appreciated that, because, although she used a lot Hebrew words to keep the spirit of the story alive, it was not necessary for me to know Hebrew to understand it. Her footnotes explained each word and helped me to keep up. That really helped me to see inside the culture, and appreciate the many nuances of both Israelis and Arabs.
If you enjoy stories about spies, or are looking to learn about this legend of Israel, you will enjoy this book.
It is very clean, as in no profanity or sex. It is also easy to read and easy to follow the storyline. And, most importantly, it is very well written and edited.
I recommend this book and give it 5 out 5 stars.
This is the thrilling story of an Israeli spy, made all the more interesting by the fact it is based on history. If you have an interest in underrated historical figures but don’t want to trawl through tiresome historical non-fiction, this is the kind of book you’ll love! It is one of those rare few books which are both informative and engaging! I couldn’t put the story down in all honestly. I loved the inclusion of the Hebrew which only added to the immersion. Overall, a fantastic book which I can’t recommend highly enough!
It is not only an enjoyable book, but also a great book for your history class!! I totally wished that in my college History class I had found this book to make a marvelous book report.
During the book, sometimes the names get confusing, but it does not make the story disagreeable. It made it even more fascinating. One can really learn a lot of history by reading this book, it is not tedious and really brings Ya’aqooba story to the light in a astonishing way. When you get to read the book, you immediately are impressed to see who Ya’aqooba is and all of his story. I enjoyed the book an recommended for those who are seeking a good story to read.
