First, the lid is not sealed at all, so, despite the filter on top, your house is going to stink.
Second, the fryer doesn't get hot enough. Heck, it doesn't even get as hot as it says it does. Testing with a thermometer, the oil would only get within about 15 degrees of what the dial was set to. 375 degrees is the max temperature, which really isn't hot enough for great french fries. Chicken fingers, etc are fantastic, though.
Third, it's kind of janky - the sheet metal on the sides is flimsy, the control unit doesn't sit straight on the corner of the unit despite being inserted correctly, the basket sits DIRECTLY on the heating element when it's submerged, etc. I'm not sure how this fryer got so many good reviews, but it certainly wasn't because anyone had compared this fryer with anything else.
It's a shame, as I really did want to like it, but it falls short of my expectations in what is a relatively expensive fryer.
Kudos for Amazon to find this for me!!!
UPDATE - The day after it arrived I made fried chicken for the first time. I used a meat thermometer because I wasn't sure how to judge doneness.
Came out perfect!
Next I steamed Lobster - Again PERFECT!
This is a kitchen tool I won't part with.
We plan on using this fryer at our lake cabin. You will be well satisfied with its performance.
If you are going to purchase just one of the two, buy the turkey fryer. It has a far larger capacity than the fish fryer and holds considerably more oil. This enables the fryer to hold its temperature while you place more fish into it to fry. The smaller capacity of the fish fryer results in the oil temperature dropping with every fish fillet dropped into the oil. The turkey fryer at Amazon is about $15.00 more, but well worth the expenditure.
The fryer came well packed in its factory box. There was a broken "finger" hold on the bottom, but an email to Masterbuilt was quickly answered and a new one on the way. The only assembly was the handle for the basket and of course removing the packing materials. The manual is well written and pictures seem to be accurate. The unit heated up in 20 minutes with a full gallon of peanut oil and the times on the fry chart were accurate, though I left the wings in a little longer for a bit more crisp. My fries were thicker than what you generally get in the frozen pack so I let them cook about 3 minutes longer and the frozen onion rings were right on time.
EDIT: The manual states that there is a "beep" that ends the timer cycle. Mine did not have one. Contacted Masterbuilt and they sent a new control unit. Same issue. Contacted again. The customer service person read the same manual that I did which states that there is a beep. Turns out that there is a misprint in the manual ... no beep. Also, when you unplug the unit the timer keeps going if there is time left on it. Hmmmm. The timer is not powered by household power. It contains a watch type battery. Didn't see that in the manual. The timer is not backlit and hard to read unless you get close to eye level which makes it kind of useless. My suggestion to MB was to put a timer in similar to what they have on their Turkey Fryer XXL. None of these issues keep the unit from being one of the best fryer units on the market backed by superior customer service.
The unit was pretty easy to clean. I recommend using Dawn as it easily cuts through the oil.Read more ›
