Powerful and Attractive

The black-finished fryer looks great in a modern kitchen, as it complements most kitchen appliances and countertop materials. Chefs might even want to leave it on display when it's not in use. For convenience, the Butterball includes a window for turkey monitoring. Simply fold back the lid for easy access and you can watch your turkey cook to a perfect crisp.

The good looks accompany a powerful 1,650-watt electric heating element that heats up the oil in less than 30 minutes. Using the sturdy turkey basket, you can cook a 14-pound turkey in only four minutes per pound--less than an hour of cooking time. Masterbuilt also added a drain clip to the fry basket. With the drain clip, you can hang the basket on the side of the fryer while the turkey drains and cools. The clip makes it easy to move the turkey to a serving platter without making a huge oily mess.

No Ordinary Turkey Fryer

Operating the Butterball couldn't be easier. Simply set the cooking temperature via the user-friendly control panel, then set the built-in digital timer to track the cooking time. A green ready light will come on when the oil is heated and the fryer is ready for use. After you lower the turkey into the oil, the timer will beep to let you know when it's done. The fryer even includes a couple of extra safety controls, including a thermostat control to keep the temperature steady (up to 375 degrees F) and an automatic shutoff function that activates when the cooking temperature gets too high.

The Butterball isn't just for turkeys. You can prepare an endless variety of foods in the fryer--from hot wings and fried fish to corndogs and fries for the kids. You can also fill the fryer with water to steam or even boil your favorite dish. Other options include inviting the whole family over for a large low-country boil, steaming fresh crab legs for two, or even trying your hand at frying desserts like doughnuts, apple turnovers, and fried ice cream.

Additional turkey fryer highlights include a built-in filter to reduce cooking odors, a drain valve for easy cleaning, a hideaway storage compartment, and a space-saving design that takes up minimal space on the counter. The fryer measures 15.7 by 14.2 by 14.6 inches (W x H x D) and carries a 90-day limited warranty.

I purchased this to try something different, and I'm not disappointed. It arrived promptly, was easy to set up, and reasonably easy to use. It heated up in less than half an hour, and produced a moist, evenly-cooked 10-lb turkey in 40 minutes. The directions also say that you can fill it with water instead of oil and use it as a large steamer, which I will find very useful.

All that said,there are a few things that you should know if you're considering buying this.

It is a very large appliance, as it must be to hold a whole turkey plus sufficient oil to fry it in. But the size has three important implications:

1) If you have wall cabinets over your kitchen counters, this item will not fit - you won't have sufficient clearance to open the lid. You'll need to plan ahead and have an alternate place to set it.

2) The unit is tall enough that even if you have a counter with adequate clearance, you will need to lift the turkey more than shoulder height to lower it into the hot oil. I am 5'8", neither tall nor short, and raising a heavy turkey to this height did not seem like a safe maneuver to be making in the vicinity of hot oil.

These aren't design flaws - they're just the consequence of the unit being large enough to fry a turkey - but they are things to take into account as you figure out where you will set this up. And on that note -

3) When fully loaded, the unit is heavy (oil + turkey + fryer = almost fifty pounds), so whatever you set it on absolutely MUST be sturdy and tip-proof.

I have friends who SWEAR by deep-frying the Thanksgiving day bird. They have the propane-fueled, outdoor tank, and it has to sit on the ground, not on the wood deck, thank you very much. And our deck is vinyl-clad aluminum. An open-flame, hot oil tank is a no. So, how to fry the turkey if you don't want to deal with the fiery apparatus and medieval danger of dousing onself (and the neighbors below, if you're in an apartment) with boiling oil? Thankfully, Masterbuilt has come up with the idea of an electric turkey fryer, thus saving how many houses, apartment and body parts from conflagration. And it can be done inside, a boon for those who live in snowy climates. (One year, we tried to grill on a gas grill in 20 degree, windy weather out on a snow covered deck. Not successful. And no fun, either.)

The unit holds two gallons of oil. The heating of all that oil takes over a half an hour, and you will have to defrost that turkey thoroughly, and it's recommended you brine the turkey (if not the kind that is injected with oil.) So count on a few days prior for this preparation if you use a frozen bird, as it must be completely defrosted. Or a day to brine overnight, if using a farm-fresh unfrozen bird. The bird should be at room temperature, for best results. This all takes a bit of planning.

Frying takes about four minutes per pound of bird, and the maximum size of bird you can do is fourteen pounds. However, only ten to twelve pounders are really recommended. I find those birds a bit small, and bonier (the bigger the bird, the more meat to bone ratio) and sometimes the younger, small birds are tougher. The bird sits horizontally in the basket.

This item is awesome!! This was my first time frying a turkey and it was amazing. Our guests were very impressed and called me the next day to thank me for their dinner (left-overs) the next day!!! A great price as well. I would recommend this fryer. You can cook other things in it as well.

I'd read a few reviews where the product failed after one turkey, so I was a little leery, but I bought it anyway. Over the course of two days (We have a family reunion at Thanksgiving and everyone expects my fried turkeys) I fried five turkeys--a couple over 14 pounds (I had to really stuff them in the basket to make them fit). This is so much easier than frying outside with a propane cooker as I've done in previous years. It takes about a half hour to get the oil hot, then I fried from 40 to 50 minutes, depending on the turkey size, then stuck a thermometer in to make sure the turkey was 170 degrees Fahrenheit inside, then pulled it out and did another. I did no clean up until after the last turkey and twice did two turkeys in a row without letting the cooker cool off. This is a great product!

We followed the directions exactly and still had numerous problems with this product. First, even though it was assembled properly and plugged in, the power indicator never came on. We knew it was plugged in because the oil and unit were getting warm. After an hour, the temperature indicator "ready" light still had not come on either. The directions said it should take about 35 minutes ... We put the turkey breast into the oil after about 55 minutes and the oil was bubbling. Then we discovered the timer didn't work. We pressed, pressed and held, etc. numerous times and nothing happened but the turkey was still bubbling so I just set my oven timer. After 10 minutes the unit shut itself off. We then took the oily mess of a turkey breast and cooked it in my convection oven. This whole episode ruined our day. We had hardly eaten anticipating our meal and then spent over 2 hours trying to get this to work and it never did. Then it was another 20 minutes to heat and 1.5 hours to cook in the other device. By the time dinner was done we were starving, stressed out and grumpy. This also wasted two gallons of very expensive peanut oil. Since it is full of uncooked turkey bits and bacteria it had to be thrown out. Sometime in the processs I tried to call Masterbuilt which is what the book says to do if the power lights won't come on...only to find that they are closed for Thanksgiving all the way until Monday. How can Butterball allow its name to be put on something and then be unavailable on Thanksgiving, a day when most turkeys are cooked. This was really disappointing. I'm glad I had no company over, but it still added stress and extra work to our day.
