Powerful and Attractive

The stainless-steel fryer looks great in a modern kitchen, as it complements most kitchen appliances and countertop materials. Chefs might even want to leave it on display when it's not in use. For convenience, the Butterball includes a window for turkey monitoring. Simply fold back the lid for easy access and you can watch your turkey cook to a perfect crisp.

The good looks accompany a powerful 1,650-watt electric heating element that heats up the oil in less than 30 minutes. Using the sturdy turkey basket, you can cook a 20-pound turkey in only four minutes per pound--just over an hour of cooking time. Masterbuilt also added a drain clip to the fry basket. With the drain clip, you can hang the basket on the side of the fryer while the turkey drains and cools. The clip makes it easy to move the turkey to a serving platter without making a huge oily mess.

No Ordinary Turkey Fryer

Operating the Butterball couldn't be easier. Simply set the cooking temperature via the user-friendly control panel, then set the built-in digital timer to track the cooking time. A green ready light will come on when the oil is heated and the fryer is ready for use. After you lower the turkey into the oil, the timer will beep to let you know when it's done. The fryer even includes a couple of extra safety controls, including a thermostat control to keep the temperature steady (up to 375 degrees F) and an automatic shutoff function that activates when the cooking temperature gets too high.

The Butterball isn't just for turkeys. You can prepare an endless variety of foods in the fryer--from hot wings and fried fish to corndogs and fries for the kids. You can also fill the fryer with water to steam or even boil your favorite dish. Other options include inviting the whole family over for a large low-country boil, steaming fresh crab legs for two, or even trying your hand at frying desserts like doughnuts, apple turnovers, and fried ice cream.

Additional turkey fryer highlights include a built-in filter to reduce cooking odors, a drain valve for easy cleaning, a hideaway storage compartment, and a space-saving design that takes up minimal space on the counter. I have been deep frying turkeys for the past 10 years using a Barbour deep fryer. Every Thanksgiving (or a few weeks before), I would have to go behind supermarkets to grab cardboard boxes to line the area of the fryer as oil would inevitably spill. Some years were better than others, but my wife was none too happy about the mess.

I was given this deep fryer as a gift two weeks ago and have just deep fried 2 turkeys that have come out just as good as the outdoor fryer but without the mess. I've used the same peanut oil twice and plan on keeping it in there through Thanksgiving. The unit was purchased from Amazon and was well packaged.

In getting the unit ready for use, make sure to remove all of the paper first (the inside is lined with cardboard...you'll need to pull the right side (this is the side where the heating mechanism comes out from) of the unit upwards) to get rid of the cardboard. Be careful when doing this as the coil could be easily broken if done too fast.

Also, you'll need to remove plastic that covers the drain, etc. You won't use more than 2.75 gallons of peanut oil (the outdoor fryer used about 4 gallons). The fryer comes with a basket which can easily hold a 20lb turkey. I suggest placing the unit in a garage (with ventilation) on an elevated surface- placing inside the home may give you a turkey odor for a few days.

The oil takes about 45 minutes to heat up. Once the unit is ready, the green light will go on. Place the turkey into the fryer and set the digital timer (about 3 1/2 to 4 minutes per pound). There are cavities in the unit so that if oil spills out, you'll be able to remove the oil (I used a dry paper towel to do this). Only do this during cooking if your unit is excessively sweating (drips coming out of the unit).

I have been deep frying turkeys for 13 years and own both a propane and the Materbuilt. I love this unit and no longer use the propane unit. I have had zero problems and have built a sliding shelf in my garage to do the cooking. Very easy to use and trouble free. Sorry if some people have had issues with the heating element, I set and "forget" which means this unit allows me to continue with other cooking details without the threat of a fire or boiling over. I cook for a big crowd so I am close to the cooker, no fires and this unit is way safer than propane, as I could never walk away from an open flame. Also the thermostat works very well and I have the highest confidence in using this product. WARNING: I am not advocating irresponsibility in not attending to the frying of any foods, if you are inexperienced in deep frying seek counsel from online sites that provide proper frying techniques(e.g. youtube). This Masterbuilt is safe and under the proper frying conditions, you should not have any regrets.
One point I would like to mention is the magnetic connection for the electric cord, hmmm not real crazy about that idea as I have had the connection come off, not a problem as I think the company is exercising a safety feature to keep the unit from operating if it were to be bumped or tipped over. Just my thoughts on what can be annoying.

I got mine at Bass Pro Shops and was excited. Fried one turkey successfully and brought it to my job for their dinner. But when I came back an hour later after I let the unit cool down, I attempted to cook my family's turkey and it didn't work. It took 2 hours to get it working pressing the reset button on the back of the heating unit at least 100 times!. When I finally did get it working, I went back to check on it 20 minutes later and it turned off. I had to give the heating unit a pretty firm tap and then it turned on! Completely inconsistent!

Cleaning the unit was a breeze, even the heating unit which collected most of the grease residue and can't be submerged in water. Everything else I placed in the dishwasher.

The oil drained well and very clean for use again.

It really is a great idea but they need to solve the issue with the heating unit not working. It shouldn't be so sensitive to movement which is what I gathered was the problem.

And worse? Their customer support number was closed on Thanksgiving. Don't brand this Butterball, if you're not going to be available on Turkey day.

I had used the butterball XL turkey fryer on thanksgiving 2011 & it worked great. Did a 20 pound turkey no problem. I got it here off of Amazon, good company for buying from & getting your purchases on time. So I had tried to do another 20 pound turkey at Christmas 2011 & it did not heat up. I check it out found the reset tried that & that didn't work. The power light stayed on still not heating. I had to rigged a heating element from my Charmglow 13 pound turkey fryer to finish the turkey which took a little bit longer to fry. I should have sent it back but being a electrician I decided to fix it myself (voiding any warranty). Upon opening the fryer I notice one wire burnt off of the heating element. Since theses elements work at hi temps, the wires are braze on not solder. It must have been a poor job of brazing because the plastic around the element melted,which was probably cause by arcing from a loose connection.If the fryer would have been left unattended it could have lead to a fire hazard. I had check the Butterball web site for a solution & found out the fryer is a Master built fryer with the butterball name on it. I had check Master Built site for a replacement element & no help there (even email them once with no response from them). I decided to try hi temp crimp on terminals & found that my crimper was to big for the job. So I am left with a broken fryer until I find a solution. This year I used my Charnglow 13 pound fryer & did two 13 pound turkeys,45 minutes per turkey(more legs to go around). There were not enough reviews on this product at the time I had purchase it. Most of the reviews I have read recently that have a similar problem of the unit not working probably don't know that the wires are burning off of the elements.Read more ›
