This version clearly shows that Masterbuilt has taken a LOT of experience and customer feedback from their previous versions and turned it into one that is really excellent (possibly perfect). There are little convenience and error-proof details all over like the front-accessible drip tray that makes dumping the old grease really simple. You don't have to reach behind it like previous models. The smoke chip feeder is smoother and more solid than any of the previous ones, and locks in place smoothly. The adjustable vent has been put on the side now, not the top, so rain or other stuff doesn't fall in there. Everything is just slightly more solid and smoother than the previous models. There is a BRIGHT light for viewing the interior in the dark.
The remote is really nice so you can monitor and change settings without ever going outside. Do a pre-warm while making your morning coffee and get it ready for meat loading. For those of use who like to smoke at varying temperatures for different cooking phases, you can just reach over and do it without going outside. The only thing I wish the remote had is a temperature alarm for the meat probe. However you can just look at it as needed and make decisions from there.
Overall this is an excellent smoker that will let you turn out great, consistent smoked meat. I haven't found anything I'd change, and that's pretty unusual for me.
Cons: The plastic parts namely the handles, are cheap and my door handle broke on the first use.
The RF unit is annoying at best. It has a very short range and often resets the smoker. If you set the smoker up on the panel then press any button on the remote, it will reset the smoker and you have to reprogram it with the remote instead.
The wood tube needs to be cleaned every 2-3 uses or it will seize up and you have to dismantle the unit to free it up.
Temp increase needed on heating element for poultry.
Now that I have complained about the bad, I'll talk about the good:
I get consistent results every time. There are many critics on electric smokers, but I have put out better quality product with this little baby than a lot of the "Wood Fire" method smokers. The temp stays true within 1-3 degrees. The temp probe is descent but you should check it against a CALIBRATED kitchen thermometer. Doing this will ensure your getting the right temps every time. I use a professional grade electric smoker at my school and the results from this machine are just as good. Highly recommend this product. It would get 5 stars if they fix the minor issue it does have.
