I purchased this product from Sam's Club, but thought I should share my experiences with the product over the year that I have owned it.

Cons: The plastic parts namely the handles, are cheap and my door handle broke on the first use.

The RF unit is annoying at best. It has a very short range and often resets the smoker. If you set the smoker up on the panel then press any button on the remote, it will reset the smoker and you have to reprogram it with the remote instead.

The wood tube needs to be cleaned every 2-3 uses or it will seize up and you have to dismantle the unit to free it up.

Temp increase needed on heating element for poultry.

Now that I have complained about the bad, I'll talk about the good:

I get consistent results every time. There are many critics on electric smokers, but I have put out better quality product with this little baby than a lot of the "Wood Fire" method smokers. The temp stays true within 1-3 degrees. The temp probe is descent but you should check it against a CALIBRATED kitchen thermometer. Doing this will ensure your getting the right temps every time. I use a professional grade electric smoker at my school and the results from this machine are just as good. Highly recommend this product. It would get 5 stars if they fix the minor issue it does have.

I've been a pretty dedicated meat smoker for around 10 years, and have owned a number of smokers. I currently have the basic 30" Masterbuilt electric without the window or remote, and decided to upgrade to this. My best friend has the old-generation version of this one, which I've used a lot. My review compares those and smokers in general.

This version clearly shows that Masterbuilt has taken a LOT of experience and customer feedback from their previous versions and turned it into one that is really excellent (possibly perfect). There are little convenience and error-proof details all over like the front-accessible drip tray that makes dumping the old grease really simple. You don't have to reach behind it like previous models. The smoke chip feeder is smoother and more solid than any of the previous ones, and locks in place smoothly. The adjustable vent has been put on the side now, not the top, so rain or other stuff doesn't fall in there. Everything is just slightly more solid and smoother than the previous models. There is a BRIGHT light for viewing the interior in the dark.

The remote is really nice so you can monitor and change settings without ever going outside. Do a pre-warm while making your morning coffee and get it ready for meat loading. For those of use who like to smoke at varying temperatures for different cooking phases, you can just reach over and do it without going outside. The only thing I wish the remote had is a temperature alarm for the meat probe. However you can just look at it as needed and make decisions from there.

Overall this is an excellent smoker that will let you turn out great, consistent smoked meat. I haven't found anything I'd change, and that's pretty unusual for me.

I worked for a grocery store 30 years ago that had a huge electric smoker that we loaded every morning and evening. It produced amazing results with no effort. I have been looking to achieve those same results at home, just on a smaller scale. So I borrowed a friend's MES 30 and loved the results. It sold itself. I wanted more space so I ordered the MES 40. The first use proved very disappointing. The thermostat was off by over 130 degrees. Said it was 325 degrees but 5 different thermometers at multiple levels in the smoker all read 190 +\- 3 degrees. The meat probe registered 22 degrees above actual internal temp of meat. I tested it multiple times recording the temps at multiple levels during the cooking process. It achieved the same results. It took over 8 hours for two baby backs to reach 180 degrees. Contacted Master Built and was told to cut the plug off and send it to them and they would send a new shell. I would have to disassemble the door and all internal parts and install them in the replacement shell. I am not their technician! Packed it up and sent back to amazon for replacement. New smoker arrived with missing parts, no screws to assemble it, and the same problems just not as extreme. Only off by 90 degrees. Door leaks smoke and side vent very tight and hard to move. Tried to smoke two baby backs and it took almost the same amount of time to get to 180 degrees. I do not understand how Master Built cannot get a thermostat to function properly. It is a great concept. Basically an oven that you can introduce smoke into. I would not recommend this product to anyone until Master Built gets a better control system.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST OF THE "GOOD" REVIEWS ARE FOR THE "OLD" GENERATION PRODUCT NOT THE "NEW" GENERATION PRODUCT. The old ones may be OK, but the new ones are not.

***FINAL UPDATE*** 2-11-13
Masterbuilt issued a full refund. They advised that they could replace the unit but it would be several weeks due to a "quality review." I'm sure this product will improve but I'll opt for another smoking solution.

***UPDATE*** 1-27-13
I received the smoker body replacement and very quickly realized that the the total disassembly of the old smoker - including all electronics - would be required. NOT AN EASY JOB. There were no instructions and the parts were all over the inside of the smoker body since the parts bag had ripped somewhere in packing or transit. A rivet tool is required for assembly and I would have to purchase one. IT AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE SMOKER AND IN THE COMPANY. They should have found a way to replace the entire unit when it failed after only 4 uses. Normally Amazon would replace it but to get an Amazon replacement, it must be in new condition. A smoker will never be in new condition after even one use. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT OR MASTERBUILT.

***UPDATE*** 1-13-13
Masterbuilt is going to replace the smoker body - that means they will send me smoker box and electrical parts and I will transfer the racks, door, wheels, legs, pans, etc. Thankfully, they didn't have me send the smoker back. I just had to cut the power cord off at the body and remove the metal serial number plate - both were then sent to Masterbuilt at MY expense. I'll post another update when they finally send replacement parts.

***UPDATE*** From 4 stars to 1
I started to use this smoker for the 4th time tonight (12-21-12).
