I'm a big fan of Maya Banks, I love her suspense books, and when this book was offered me to read for a review, I was excited. Well, it didn't work out so well. And I wish I could praise this book, but it just didn't work for me.
I didn't connect, or like, the main characters. Evangeline is super insecure, and stays that way. There's one incident that has happened with her first boyfriend, who was cruel to her, and no convincing from others will wipe that event from her mind.
Drake, he thinks of himself as the god of his world, and acts in the role as well.
Sometimes dominance is done with a loving, caring attitude, and can be a huge turn on, but here, for some reason it comes off as very negative, almost angry. As erotica genre, the sex scenes are expected, and can be alluring, but there was something very awkward in some of them, that made me just uncomfortable.
The story moves on surprisingly slowly, yet very little information about the characters or their past is revealed.
So, when you have a hard time even liking the characters, connecting with them, understanding their reasons for the behavior, and you are trying your best to get through a story, you are not in, and then the ending, well, I was appalled. The events are just not acceptable. All I could think of, was, 'I can't unread that'.
To top it off, the story ends in a cliffhanger, and the second part of the tale comes in May (according to Amazon), and if you are a follower of the blog, you know that the knowledge of just that would have made me say no thank you for the book.
I don't like to write bad reviews, I have struggled with this one as well, but I also believe in always giving your honest opinion, and that's what this is, my opinion. I am sure there's an audience for this book, but it didn't work for me.

On the fence, between 3 and 4 stars.

OMG I have so much to say about this book that I’m not even sure where to start.

Overall I enjoyed this book but there were a bunch of little things that bugged me. I’ll start with the biggies of the little things first. This book isn’t quite insta-love but it’s more like insta-trust and insta-compliance and it just wasn’t realistic to me. Then there’s anal play and that’s not the issue, but the scene in which it occurs had me asking a lot of questions. I buddy read this book with a fellow blogger, and she was scratching her head and asking the same questions. It was just not very realistic for me. Finally some word choices the author used were a big repetitive and it stuck out for me.

Even though the couple had a bit of “insta” going on, I was still drawn into their story and wanted to learn more about them. The beginning is slow moving and some things could’ve been condensed but still they grabbed me and I wanted to see where things went.

Evangeline is a small town girl that moved to New York City to help her mom and dad. Her dad is disabled and her mom has to take care of him so Evangeline moved to NY to earn more money. She works long hours in a bar and sends all she can home. She recently had some guy trouble and her girlfriends get her a VIP pass to a very exclusive club that this ex-boyfriend frequents. The plan was to show him she’s over him, but that plan doesn’t really work out. Things go very wrong for her.

Drake is a rich business man who has his fingers in all types of business (and not all is above board). Evangeline catches his eye while she’s in his club and he sends a bodyguard to get her and that’s when things move quite fast.

The last 15% starts to really move and then boom cliff and I’m like WTF! I sort of knew when there were soooo many questions still unresolved so now I’ll sit and pout 😉 until book 2 is on my kindle! (And I will read the next book.)

Let me preface this review by saying I am a fan of Maya Banks and read everything of hers. I have also never written a review before. So the fact that I feel compelled to should tell you something about my feelings. To be honest, I don't even know where to begin.

Evangeline:
I don't think Maya could have written a more whiny, annoying, insipid character. She goes on and on and on and on about how she's not beautiful, girls like her (insert phrase here), she's so ashamed/humiliated, etc., etc., etc. That was just in the first 3 pages!! Ok, maybe I exaggerated slightly but I swear to god not by much.

Then there's sugar won't melt in her mouth she's just so nice, sweet, and good. There's nothing wrong with have a lead character like this but she was so ridiculous and over the top. Every time she does get angry, she feels guilty and realizes SHE was wrong so of course she has to apologize. I am so tired of stories where the female gets justifiably upset but somehow it still ends up being her fault and on her to apologize.

Then there's her "submission." I say that word in quotes because I don't believe what went on was submission. Submission implies safe, sane, and consensual. Drake purposefully overwhelmed Evangeline so she would give in, which of course she did. The guy finds out she was dumped after recently losing her virginity and within minutes he has her on his desk her aND is going down on her. Within a day of meeting, she's essentially kidnapped and moves in with Drake where her complete submission, in ALL things, is demanded. She has only had sex once and suddenly she's a slave. Seriously? What about that screams safe, sane, or consensual (maybe in the loosest sense of the word).
