I didn't connect, or like, the main characters. Evangeline is super insecure, and stays that way. There's one incident that has happened with her first boyfriend, who was cruel to her, and no convincing from others will wipe that event from her mind.
Drake, he thinks of himself as the god of his world, and acts in the role as well.
Sometimes dominance is done with a loving, caring attitude, and can be a huge turn on, but here, for some reason it comes off as very negative, almost angry. As erotica genre, the sex scenes are expected, and can be alluring, but there was something very awkward in some of them, that made me just uncomfortable.
The story moves on surprisingly slowly, yet very little information about the characters or their past is revealed.
So, when you have a hard time even liking the characters, connecting with them, understanding their reasons for the behavior, and you are trying your best to get through a story, you are not in, and then the ending, well, I was appalled. The events are just not acceptable. All I could think of, was, 'I can't unread that'.
To top it off, the story ends in a cliffhanger, and the second part of the tale comes in May (according to Amazon), and if you are a follower of the blog, you know that the knowledge of just that would have made me say no thank you for the book.
I don't like to write bad reviews, I have struggled with this one as well, but I also believe in always giving your honest opinion, and that's what this is, my opinion. I am sure there's an audience for this book, but it didn't work for me.
I don't think Maya could have written a more whiny, annoying, insipid character. She goes on and on and on and on about how she's not beautiful, girls like her (insert phrase here), she's so ashamed/humiliated, etc., etc., etc. That was just in the first 3 pages!! Ok, maybe I exaggerated slightly but I swear to god not by much.
Then there's sugar won't melt in her mouth she's just so nice, sweet, and good. There's nothing wrong with have a lead character like this but she was so ridiculous and over the top. Every time she does get angry, she feels guilty and realizes SHE was wrong so of course she has to apologize. I am so tired of stories where the female gets justifiably upset but somehow it still ends up being her fault and on her to apologize.
Then there's her "submission." I say that word in quotes because I don't believe what went on was submission. Submission implies safe, sane, and consensual. Drake purposefully overwhelmed Evangeline so she would give in, which of course she did. The guy finds out she was dumped after recently losing her virginity and within minutes he has her on his desk her aND is going down on her. Within a day of meeting, she's essentially kidnapped and moves in with Drake where her complete submission, in ALL things, is demanded. She has only had sex once and suddenly she's a slave. Seriously? What about that screams safe, sane, or consensual (maybe in the loosest sense of the word). I could go on with Evangeline but won't.
He'said a straight up ass. There is absolutely nothing sexy about a predator intentionally overwhelming a naive doormat to get what he wants. Then there's the anal sex. She has never had anal sex before, hell she hasn't really had sex period. Yet he takes her without her having ever worn a plug AND the only amount of prep is him lubing her up with his fingers. Then he takes her roughly and of course she loves it and a good time is had by all. This happens not once but twice (second time has even less prep). Oh yeah, let's not forget Drake is larger than most men.
On a side note, is anybody else as sick as I am of the men in books being the richest, the biggest badass, having the biggest penis, and any number of other traits that are just SO much better than everybody else. What's wrong with being great in bed with a "normal" size penis?
The final thing I will say about Drake specifically regards the end of the book. To me, he flat out orally sodomized Evangeline. It doesn't matter if she didn't say no, he knew she didn't want it and he had her so brainwashed that she agreed she HAD to obey no matter what, she couldn't say no. Furthermore, she was too shocked and humiliated to say no. That is NOT consensual in anyway!! Some people like humiliation in this type of relationship but nothing about their dynamic was about that,. It was just the opposite in fact!! Him bring torn up and sorry doesn't mean crap.
This book was so dang vague it's ridiculous. Never once do we really know what Drake does or about his relationship with his "brothers." Of course we can speculate but we never learn anything substantive about the characters other than a little about Evangeline. I have read mystery books with less secrecy!!
There are so many parts of this book that are contradictory. For example, Evangeline was going on about how protective her friends are and how much they care. Then when she acts COMPLETELY out of character and one of them shows up, Evangeline goes off on her. All within not many pages. That is just one example of many.
The biggest problem with the story though is how fast it moved. I actually got whiplash!! Within a day, Evangeline gives up her job, her friends, her apartment, her clothes, and her independence because Drake orders her too. She goes from one mediocre sexual experience to slave. Because let's be real, she has NO safe word and has been told she has NO right to say no. What would you call that? Again, within a day of meeting this man. She also goes from that one abismal experience and one vague mention of a deepseeted desire to give up control to full on submission in ALL things. To say this defies believability is a massive understatement.
The only only good part about this book is Evangeline's interaction with the other men in the book. Or rather, their reaction to her.
I could probably go on but will end it here. I know, you're probably like about dang time!! But how do you chose which horrible parts of this book to mention? A lot of you are going to think I am being too harsh, as evidenced by the number of people who loved the book. But to say I am bitterly disappointed and disgusted is putting it midly. I am choosing to believe this is an abnormality rather than a sign of Maya'S future work.
