I bought this book as gift and it was a great success! Not only I had a pleasure of watching my friend's face light up, I was promised to par take in experimental testing of recipes made from this book! Talk about a perfect gift!
So far I have been invited as a tester for a veal ragout (Yum!) and Reine de Saba, a darkly moist and delicious chocolate cake. I am looking forward to more "dividends" from this cook book.
If you are looking for a gift that is bound to be a smashing success - I recommend this book!

On another note the book is well bound so it should last for many years of kitchen use.
The reason is simple: I prefer to work from spiral-bound editions, over which I can apply a layer of poly wrap (Saran ?) as a protector, while cooking.
I take the "trade paper-bound" editions to a local copier service center (Kinkos in the old days, FedEx today) and have them mount, in their motorized paper-cutter, the edition with clear vinyl covers and in "one fell swoop" slice-off the so-called "perfect binding". About 1/8", or a little less, is enough to free ALL the pages from that "perfect binding" goop.
Then, the loose pages, including the precisely-fitting vinyl covers, are spiral-bound.
There! In a few minutes work and for bout six bucks I have a "working copy" of the volumes, one which I can freely and easily use. More freely and more easy than an expensive hard-bound edition.
"Mastering the Art of French Cooking" along with the anniversary edition of "The Joy of Cooking" and perhaps a couple of America's Test Kitchen books (mainly the pasta book and and the chicken book) are essential references in my kitchen.
By rebinding the "trade paper-bound" editions, as I have described, above, I have made these more usable.
